.@edokeefe just asked WH press secretary Jen Psaki a series of great questions on immigration:

What is the Biden admin.'s message to would-be migrants in Latin America?

"It is not the time to come" to the US, Psaki said, noting that changes to border policy will take time.
Psaki said the admin. is committed to building a "humane" asylum system, but warned that the journey to the US "remains a dangerous trip."

She demurred when Ed asked about the current CDC-authorized border policy of expelling migrants and asylum-seekers during the pandemic.
"I would just say that continuing to take policy steps to address the plight of migrant families, to do so in a humane and moral way, is a priority of this administration," Psaki said.
.@edokeefe also asked about whether President Biden would consider using his executive authority to shield immigrants deemed to be essential workers during the pandemic from deportation.

"I don't have anything on that policy consideration," Psaki responded.

Pres. Biden is set to end Remain-in-Mexico and reshape asylum processing.

But the Biden administration continues to use a Trump-era CDC order to expel migrants — including families with children — and is telling Central Americans the policy will continue.
cbsnews.com/news/biden-imm…
Three former Trump administration officials said the CDC order was authorized under political pressure from the White House.

One former CDC official said the agency was "forced to do it," while another called the policy a "misappropriation" of public health laws.
The three federal judges who have examined the expulsions have concluded they are not authorized by public health law.

80 + public health experts are urging the new CDC director to rescind the order, denouncing it as an edict with "no scientific basis":

NEW — A panel of circuit judges allowed US border officials to use a Trump-era emergency policy to swiftly expel unaccompanied migrant children from US soil without a court hearing or an asylum interview. @CBSNews.

Will the Biden administration do so?
cbsnews.com/news/migrant-c…
Representatives for the Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection did not immediately respond to requests to clarify their plans.

The Justice Department declined to comment on today's court order.
The @ACLU's Lee Gelernt called it a "temporary setback" and said he will continue the lawsuit on behalf of migrant children.

"But we hope the Biden administration will not make ongoing litigation necessary by rescinding this illegal policy created by the Trump administration."

JUST IN — The DC Circuit Court suspends a lower court that had blocked US border officials from using a Trump-era pandemic policy to expel unaccompanied migrant children without a court hearing or an asylum interview.
While US border officials can now, in theory, resume expelling unaccompanied children, it's unclear if the Biden admin will do so.

Thousands of children were expelled before a judge ordered the practice to stop in Nov. One of them was 15-year-old Marjory:

New — President Biden plans to rescind strict limits on legal immigration that former President Trump said were necessary to protect U.S. workers during the coronavirus recession, according to a top White House adviser.
cbsnews.com/news/biden-tru…
Mr. Trump's proclamation, currently set to expire on March 31, has restricted family and employment-based immigration; suspended the diversity visa lottery; and barred the issuance of certain temporary work visas, like those for the H-1B program.
The remarks by top White House official Esther Olavarria represent the first indication of the Biden administration's views on the visa limits.

During the campaign and transition, Mr. Biden did not address the policy, nor did his advisers commit to revoking it.

STORY: Federal judge blocks Biden's 100-day deportation moratorium for 14 days
cbsnews.com/news/biden-dep…
It's important to note that while the deportation moratorium will be suspended for 14 days, today's order does not block the Biden admin. from enforcing the rest of the provisions of last week's DHS memo, which include new guidelines for ICE arrests set to take effect Monday.
