WOW, Jeff Bezos is stepping down as CEO of Amazon — will become executive chair.
pretty amazing this didn't leak at all?
In his letter to Amazon employees, Jeff Bezos says he will Pivot to Philanthropy.

I will "have the time and energy I need to focus on the Day 1 Fund, the Bezos Earth Fund, Blue Origin, The Washington Post, and my other passions."

Full letter here.
Jeff Bezos has a net worth of $200 billion but has had a limited record as a philanthropist until recently.

Now he says he's ready to commit.

"I’ve never had more energy, and this isn’t about retiring. I’m super passionate about the impact I think these organizations can have."
Because it's basically de rigeur these days with him, we should say: No, Jeff Bezos has not posted anything about this on his Instagram.
There's a long history of founder-CEOs becoming executive chairmen and then spending their new free time on philanthropy.

Here's the most prominent example — from 2000 and a different Seattle tech gazillionaire.

I wrote about Elon Musk, Chamath and GameStop.

And about how a pair of tech billionaires somehow became the heroes of America's anti-billionaire moment.

A little news in here:

Chamath Palihapitiya last week donated $100,000 to the group organizing the recall of Gavin Newsom.

It's one of the biggest checks to date to the Rescue California committee.

The debate on Wall Street Bets about billionaires in society is fun.

The Lincoln Project is promising a campaign "aimed" at Microsoft's board of directors.

On Microsoft's board of directors is ... Reid Hoffman, one of the Lincoln Project's most prominent supporters.
We'll see what @SteveSchmidtSES has planned, but it's a reminder of how complicated things can be when you're a billionaire mega-donor.

Your corporate and political investments can conflict with one another.
New: Microsoft has taken the unusual step of now releasing a full transcript of president Brad Smith's leaked comments about why its PAC makes political donations.

Here's some news:

Elon Musk says he is donating $100 million for "a prize for best carpton capture technology."

This would be his single biggest public philanthropic gift ever. Image
This $100 million from Elon Musk would instantly double his entire lifetime giving to philanthropy to date.

Elon Musk is wrestling with his status as the world's wealthiest person — and a relatively meager track record as a major philanthropist.

He is going more and more public with his giving.

Our story from last week on the big questions now before him.

This website is broken.

Politicians with huge followings sharing this false story.
As a reporter, there’s no worse feeling than getting a story wrong — I’ve been there — but if you tweet something incorrect and it goes mega-viral, you should delete it.

There are few people during this crisis that make me angrier than those who intellectually master all things COVID — “The latest study!” “Today’s numbers!” — and then live their lives in a way that perpetuates that very reality they fret about.
It’s like — spend less time smashing the RT button on the latest great Atlantic article and more time ... not going to an indoor restaurant.
It’s definitely a Real Type of person during Covid.

People who are borderline ~obsessed~ with Covid news coverage, but somehow create an internal narrative in which they themselves are not part of that world.

“Well, I’m just one of 330 million people,” the thinking goes.

NEW —

Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz put in another $25 million into a Joe Biden super PAC in the final three weeks of the presidential election.

Moskovitz donated a total of at least $47 million to Future Forward PAC — and that's just in the giving that is disclosed. ImageImageImageImage
My story from last month on Dustin Moskovitz and the super PAC Future Forward.

I am speculating, but I would not be shocked if there's a lot more money from Moskovitz that has been donated to Future Forward's affiliated dark money group.

MORE big donors to Future Forward, the anti-Trump super PAC largely financed by Silicon Valley:

— An LLC associated with crypto entrpreneur Sam Bankman-Fried (@SBF_Alameda), which gave $5.3 million

— Karla Jurvetson donated $2.5 million

— Wendy Schmidt gave $1 million
