It's San Francisco vs. San Francisco. City Attorney @dennisherrera today will sue the San Francisco Unified School District and the Board of Education for failing to craft a plan to reopen its schools. "So far, they have earned an F," he says.

Mayor @LondonBreed supports the city's lawsuit to reopen public schools.

“This is not the path we would have chosen, but nothing matters more right now than getting our kids back in school," she said. "This is hurting the mental health of our kids and our families."

Superintendent Vince Matthews and Board President Gabriela Lopez are holding a press conference to respond to the city’s lawsuit. Matthews calls it frivolous and a waste of time and energy. He says there is a plan. Lopez says the lawsuit is petty and an embarrassment.

Matthews says discussions are ongoing with unions about what color tier will need to be achieved before opening. Also discussing how many educator vaccinations need to happen first.

“What could the city do to be more helpful?” Matthews asks. Says Herrera should have reached out to him before filing the lawsuit. “There was no communication whatsoever...This isn’t helpful.”

Vince Matthews says he cannot give an estimated date for school reopening. Vaccines aren’t coming in big enough numbers and variants are a question.
