The state Senate will meet at 11 a.m. today to take up the COVID-19 relief bill again.

It's expected to pass and will go to @GovEvers' desk. Evers has signaled he doesn't support it. The bill was amended by the Assembly after Evers and Senate Republicans struck a deal.
@GovEvers Legislative Democrats in a presser this morning say they are introducing a bill to mandate masks statewide. The announcement comes ahead of the Senate's extraordinary legislative session.
@GovEvers By the way, an "extraordinary session" is the name of a floor session called by the legislative leaders outside of the normal calendar. (That is not me editorializing.)
.@jvanegeren in presser asks @RepStubbs, co-chair of Assembly taskforce on racial disparities, if she believes the panel will be effective given co-chair @RepSteineke's August comments about it being a "political loser."

Stubbs didn't answer and the presser was ended.
@jvanegeren @RepStubbs @RepSteineke Democratic Sen. @JonErpenbach of West Point says AB1, the COVID-19 relief bill, will likely be vetoed. He says Senate should reject Assembly COVID-19 bill and keep deal w/ Evers

"The pandemic is still going to be here and we will have nothing to show for it," he says.
@jvanegeren @RepStubbs @RepSteineke @JonErpenbach Republican @SenKooyenga of Brookfield is back on the floor urging the reopening of schools that are still providing virtual instruction. He backs the bill b/c of a measure that expands the state's open enrollment program during the pandemic.
@jvanegeren @RepStubbs @RepSteineke @JonErpenbach @SenKooyenga Democratic @SenChrisLarson of Milwaukee also says this bill will be vetoed.
@jvanegeren @RepStubbs @RepSteineke @JonErpenbach @SenKooyenga @SenChrisLarson Wisconsin state Senate passes COVID-19 relief bill likely heading for a veto 19-11.

And now, Republican Sen. Steve Nass says he is drafting a new resolution to end the new emergency order that mandates masks.

"I will also be calling on senate leadership to consider filing for an emergency action in the Wisconsin Supreme Court.”
"The rule of law and the Wisconsin Constitution require Evers to recognize the legislature ended his emergency powers. Instead, Tony Evers now acts no differently than a dictator in control of a banana republic," Nass says.

The state Assembly will meet at 10 a.m. today to vote on a resolution to end the state's mask mandate -- the only statewide COVID-19 mitigation measure in place.

If it passes, it will go to the Senate. Because it's a joint resolution, @GovEvers doesn't have to sign it.
@GovEvers Nearly 60 organizations are opposed to the mask repeal, including groups that represent doctors, hospitals, small businesses and educators, among others.
@GovEvers Republican Sen. Steve Nass of Whitewater said Republicans should have acted last year to end the emergency order and mask mandate. But he said he was pleased Assembly Republicans were acting now.

In asking to oversee a taskforce on racial disparities - WI has some of the worst in the nation - Majority Leader Jim Steineke said he should be picked because leading it would be a "political loser" & his ambitions stop at county exec: upnorthnewswi.com/2021/02/03/exc… via @UpNorthNewsWI
@UpNorthNewsWI Statement from Steineke: "When I agreed to be a co-chair for the Speaker’s Task Force on Racial Disparities, I knew we would have our work cut out for us in terms of finding common ground in what has sometimes been a very divisive issue."
@UpNorthNewsWI "Through our diverse 33-person membership and in meetings held around the state, we have succeeded in finding areas of consensus and are hopeful that these will translate into real differences for equity in our state."

It looks like @GovEvers may have a deal with at least Senate Republicans on a new COVID-19 deal.
@GovEvers .@GovEvers: "I’ve been grateful to work together with Republican Majority Leader LeMahieu to find common ground and pass a bill on COVID-19 that reflects a good faith effort in compromise and bipartisanship."
@GovEvers "Although it's not the COVID compromise we originally proposed, AB 1 as amended by the Senate is a good start to support our state’s response to this pandemic. The Assembly should pass AB 1 as it was amended today and send it to my desk for my signature without delay.”
