Well, that film was from a series called 'Rip it Up' and both films have some shared history
I too felt RIU had the same sort of feeling and when I raised my concern regarding the BBC series I was told by the person responsible “none of them feel like Teenage Superstars to me.”
If we rewind back a few years, I was approached by the National Museum of Scotland to be on the Steering Committee for an exhibition that would be entitled 'Rip it Up'...They had seen one of my music documentaries and were keen to base an exhibition around them....
BBC Scotland had also shown an interest in my films around this time. They had been viewing early cuts of Big Gold Dream, my previous film. They liked it and later screened it. They deemed it successful so suggested I send them early cuts of Teenage Superstars...
After sending my rough cuts to BBC Scotland I was very shortly told that they loved it. We liaised on many matters relating to its production. I was later asked to send a clip to show executives the 'type of stuff' they would like to show in the future..This sounded great...
In 2017 I was surprised -to say the least- to read a joint press release by the Museum and BBC Scotland. They were working on an exhibition with a tie-in television series on Scottish music called 'Rip it Up'. The BBC Executive was the exact same person I'd been sending my cuts to
I was later informed that 3 of my key crew had been approached to work on this series. We only had about 5 crew members. I was also informed that some of my crew were asked if they could provide copies of Teenage Superstars.
I must be clear that I am not suggesting anything untoward has happened. I have only stated a timeline of facts which are not disputed by anyone. I hope there will be more films made on this same subject, all told in their own, unique way...
I feel our film can sit proudly beside Bellshill Beat and Serious Drugs, excellent films which also cover the same subject, using differing approaches, and both with distinct individual voices. Both films in which we reference and have publicly credited. I hope there are more...
I read a few tweets since TS had it's TV premiere, of the 'I'm sure this was on BBC a few years ago' ilk. I can't comment. They certainly feel similar to me so perhaps the last word should go to RIU's director ''a funny coincidence perhaps?" when asked why this cat was in both
Hopefully this clears things up. We kept it simple -listen and allow the musicians to tell their own story in their own words and with the respect they deserve. Genuine thanks to everyone for their support for us FINALLY getting it seen on TV x
