I tried not to respond to what people were saying to @AOC. SA isn't something I wear as a badge of honor, but I see this rhetoric of "if you had a gun" in my volunteering for @MomsDemand and it's dangerous rhetoric.

It's been almost 20 yrs since my assault. I was fast asleep, when a monster crawled in the window, and found me in my bedroom. He took the phone off the hook and put it next to my ear, your call can not be completed as dialed, please hang up and try again, over and over.

I woke up dazed and when my eyes cleared I realized there was a man standing over me. That wakes you up damn fast, I screamed, he put his hand over my face, and he was wearing gardening gloves, and that's when I realized I was in a very bad spot.

I couldn't get up and get my gun with his hand over my face, I couldn't get up and grab my gun as he was taking my clothes off, and I couldn't of grabbed my gun while we were in a fist fight as I willed him to get out.

Even if my gun was in my hand while I slept, it wouldn't have saved me. It probably would have been used to kill me instead. That is what the facts tell us.
I'm still a gun owner, I still think it's ok to own a gun, but I also know that trauma response AOC talks about.

It only takes one man looking at me funny to sweat, or a dark parking lot, or being home alone at night, or wanting to take a damn walk in the park by myself, but knowing I cannot without a panic attack.

It doesn't have to be another SA to trigger a trauma response. It's any moment of fear or not feeling safe. She isn't a drama queen, she's a survivor, and she can react to fear however the hell she wants.
