I stumbled upon a comment box about this and I just want to talk about it. Why do people normalize (sexual and mental) harassment in the internet? Why is trolling still in 2021 taken as "what internet is"? Why is the person being harassed blaimed so often?
"Just ignore it", "Welcome to the internet" and so on, is always a comment, when someone talks about themselves being bullied or even sexually harrased online. This shouldn't be happening.. In today's world, internet isn't just a place for few trolls to hang around in...
This is a place to make income, and right now during COVID, this is a place to be social with people, now that physical contacts are limited. Internet should be safe place to go to talk to your friends, or make something you love, in the same way real life is...
If some street musician plays badly, are you straight up bullying them down? If someone decides to put some revealing clothes on, do you shout stupid things to them? If someone is just doing something they love, that you might not be interested in, are you gonna bully them?
The sad thing is, real life was like that as a kid and preteen, but now, it's adults harassing people online, along with the kids. Harassment is always a crime, also online, and it can't be made ok by just saying "ignore it"... The same way you can't hit someone on the street
and afterwards just shout "ignore it". It doesn't work like that. Internet isn't a place where you can do and say everything and hide behind being "a troll". Stop normalizing online harassment, fight against it. Stop trying to blame the person being harassed by saying
that they should just take it because this is internet. No one should never have to suffer with harassment of any kind, and the problem is NEVER in the person being harassed. If you feel so bad, you need to pull others down, find help, don't push it out on other people.
Internet is the main social platform right now, and it should be safe for everyone. Sadly this isn't the case, because there are still way too many ill-minded people in here, who can't tell the difference between harassment and being "funny".
