Pictures have emerged showing the living conditions of IDPs in Shire. The living conditions are visibly poor. Lack of water, food, healthcare, sanitation facilities and malnutrition is rampant
The IDPs are living in an abandoned construction site which is unsafe and dangerous
IDPs at Shire campus (Aksum University)
-more than 40,000 IDPs with around 6000 under 5 years old
-more than 400 pregnant and lactating mothers
-more than 800 with diabetes, hypertension, epilepsy,
bronchial asthma or HIV. Seven of them have died.
-200 disabled and 600 elderly
At the IDP site (abandoned building)
-no organization or UN agency to coordinate+support the people
-only 20 kg of wheat was supplied to family heads for the last 3 months
- poor sanitation facilities with large-scale open defecation and many people with diarrhea
-mobile clinic in place organized by volunteer health workers; severe shortage of
medicines
-not provided are non-food items such as mattress, sheets, water bucket, mosquito nets
-critical challenge related to nutrition (severe acute malnutrition rate = 2.9; moderate acute malnutrition =10.00) with no program to support children with malnutrition and no supplementary feeding program to children, pregnant+lactating women, the disabled and elderly.
