This week, the Senate will hear arguments about why the former seditionist President of the United States should be convicted of Inciting an Insurrection. Democrats will argue that the former commander in chief convinced an army of his followers to storm the Capitol. #velshi
2/13
Democrats will argue that the events of 1/6 damaged our Democracy.
But democracy was not the only victim of the insurrection. There is a yet greater and more personal toll for those who were inside the Capitol and those who were defending it. #velshi

Officer Sicknick (left) sacrificed his life. Officer Goodman (right) risked his life to save Members of Congress. These are names we’ve come to know & praise, but there are other heroes who woke up on 1/6 as one version of themselves & went to sleep forever changed. #velshi

If an injury is not fatal, it is often overlooked by the public and the media.
But the officers who were thrown down flights of stairs and smashed in the head don't have the privilege of overlooking their injuries. #velshi
5/13
140 police officers were hurt during the riots. 38 Capitol police employees tested positive for the coronavirus following the riots. As for immediate physical injuries, the Capitol Police Officer’s Union says brain injuries appear to be most common. #velshi
6/13
One cop cracked two ribs & smashed two spinal discs. Another was stabbed with the stake from a metal fence. One officer is going to lose an eye. #velshi
7/13
A bunch of conspiracy-toting seditionists acted on their defeated President’s refusal to accept his election loss, and now a police officer is dead, many are injured, and one will lose an eye. #velshi
8/13
What cannot be measured by concussions & wounds is the hidden damage: the mental anguish that survivors of traumatic events have to live with. 2 officers who defended the Capitol died by suicide after the attack. Their names are Jeffrey Smith & Howard Liebengood. #velshi
9/13
Members of Congress spoke on the floor of the House last week, some breaking down in tears as they recalled the siege. Rep. Dean Phillips described feeling like a “sitting duck”, looking around & realizing that all he had to defend himself with was a single pencil. #velshi
10/13
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of was in the balcony of the House chamber with a group of colleagues when the chaos unfolded. She heard a gunshot right outside the chambers’ doors. She crouched behind chairs & began to pray with some of her peers. #velshi
11/13
To the United States Senators who will deliberate this week, remember the consequences of what you are doing. #velshi
12/13
Convicting the seditionist former President will hurt him, and you may pay a political price for voting to convict. #velshi
13/13
Senators, voting to convict is a choice you get to make. Those who will live with the actual physical and emotional scars of January 6th had no choice. When you make your decision, remember them. #velshi

A couple is two people, a minyan is ten, a jury is twelve - so what do you call eleven people? #velshi

Well in the case of the 11 House Republicans who joined the 219 democrats in voting to remove Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene from her committees assignments, you call it a good start … but with a very big caveat. #velshi
3/13
The House of Representatives resolution punishing Greene was barely more than a page long. House rules require Members of Congress to “reflect credibly” on the chamber, and pointed to Greene being removed for quote “conduct she has exhibited.” #velshi

17 days ago @VP Kamala Harris became the first woman of color, the first woman of south Asian heritage, the first graduate of an Historically Black College & University AND, the first Black woman Vice President of the United States of America. #velshi
@VP 2/12
Whether or not you share @VP Harris politics, who she is embodies the future of our country, one that is growing ever more racially diverse. #velshi

Harris’s history-making started years before her swearing in ceremony when, after becoming just the second Black woman to serve in the Senate, she announced her plans to seek the Democratic nomination for President. #velshi

Last week General Motors announced plans to be carbon neutral in its global operations by 2040 & to offer only zero-emissions vehicles even by 2035. #velshi

I’ve had my share of things to say about GM's poor corporate responsibility & leadership for years but now, it seems, even GM sees the writing on the wall: the future is about cutting emissions, transitioning to electric vehicles or other zero-emissions technologies #velshi

America is less than 5% of the world’s population, but uses 20% of all the oil produced in the world every day. Gasoline for driving accounts for half of that. #velshi

By now you have undoubtedly seen the craziness going on in the stock market, with a selection of stocks surging hundreds if not thousands of percent in a matter of days or even hours, along with a whole bunch of financial jargon. So what exactly is going on? #velshi
2/15
One major term you have heard is "shorting" - which is just placing a bet that a stock will go down in price. #velshi

An investor can make money on this type of gamble by borrowing shares from a broker, w/o initially paying for them, selling them immediately & then later buying the shares at a lower price & returning them to the broker, keeping the difference in price as profit. #velshi

President Biden signed an executive order phasing out the federal govt's use of privatized prisons. It instructs the Justice dept. NOT to renew contracts with privately-operated prisons; a policy that was first implemented under Obama, then reversed in 2017 by Trump. #velshi
2/13
Private prisons are a stupid, amoral idea. So how did we end up with them in the first place? For starters, the U.S. is the most prolific incarcerator on the planet. That is a fact & it is not new. #velshi
3/13
2018 figures show the U.S. ranks number one when it comes to the total number of incarcerated people. It has roughly 300,000 more people that have been sentenced to prison than China does... which has literally one billion more in population. #velshi

This past week, before he did an interview with a top-rated AM radio station in St. Louis, and THEN being interviewed on CNN, Senator @HawleyMO wrote an Op-Ed for the fourth highest circulated newspaper in America. #velshi
2/13
In all of those extremely high-profile appearances, he repeated his grievance that he is being quote "cancelled" and quote "muzzled." That's rich. #velshi
3/13
Hawley freely discussing his being "muzzled" seems lost on him as he writes about how "corporate monopolies and the left team up to shut down speech they don't like and force their political agenda on America…” #velshi
