Hello,
I'm the guy who plows the neighbor's drives out on both sides of my house. No, I'm not YOUR neighbor, but I am "that guy". The neighbor to the west of me voted for Trump. The neighbor to the east voted for Biden.
Guess what, they're BOTH still my neighbors & friends! 1/
They also know who I voted for, and it doesn't matter. You see, we're adults. Adults realize that you can have political, religious, philosophical, etc differences and STILL be...(dare I say it?)....FRIENDS!
We've existed this way for YEARS! Here's how it works...
2/
I have something they don't have, a snow plow.
It takes me about 10 minutes to drive next door, drop that plow, and clear out the neighbor's drive so she can get to work. I really don't think much about it, because I'm having fun playing in the snow.
But here's the cool part
3/
Five years ago, things fell apart for me. Lost my dad, was told my entire career was redundant after a buyout, and several other tragedies at the same time. Here comes my neighbor, after finding out, jumping the fence with a beer in hand....
4/
We sat and talked for hours. She noticed that I was struggling, was concerned, and she had something I didn't have...a career as a psychologist. She laughed when I joked about her fees, and told me what I always tell her, "that's just what neighbors do".
5/
It turns out she always wondered how she could return the favor, and when she saw my life collapsing around me, she jumped at the opportunity.
"How does this happen?", this writer may ask. "How do they get along when this bearded philistine is to be loathed for his politics?"
6/
It's simple, really. One must first realize that politics is ONE facet of the multi-faceted individual. If you judge everyone based on their ballot, then you've already lost your percieved moral high ground.
Grow up. Learn to connect, and develop an emotional IQ.
