Some people think great teammates are born… they aren’t.

More goes into being great to play with than meets the eye. It is our job as coaches to give our players the tools they need to become elite teammates.

The Ten Teammate Commandments

A Thread 👇👇👇
1a/ Thou shalt be the thermostat, not the thermometer.

Be an energy giver and force others around you to raise their temperature to the level you dictate.

Avoid being a thermometer, who walks into the gym & lets the environment dictate their temperature/energy.
1b/ Players who bring constant energy make everything more competitive, lift up those around them & are just more FUN to play with!

Bringing energy day in day out is step one to being a great teammate!! Listen to Geno 👇👇👇
2/ Thou shalt be the hype man.

Celebrate your teammate's success more than your own.

Be the player who yells “AND ONEEE” for a teammate, who gives a big high 5, who waves the towel on the bench after a charge, and makes every teammate feel special during their big moments.
3/ Thou shalt use the Magic Johnson Effect

Make sure everyone knows how much you believe in them.

Magic Johnson was known for feeding his teammates confidence.

“Kareem, no one can stop the sky hook! James, no big can run with you. Coop, best defender in the league!”
4/ Thou shalt always pick up teammates after a mistake.

There will be dozens of mistakes every game. These won't win or lose the game, it will be how you as a team respond to them that does.

Be the player that lets a teammate know it’s ok and encourages them in tough moments.
5/ Thou shalt get touches.

Touch builds trust & passes energy from one player to another. Find chances to give a teammate a high five, put your arm around their shoulder, a pound, or even a flying chest bump.

How much should you do it? Watch the high 5 GOAT 👇👇👇
6/ Thou shalt use a 6:1 ratio.

For every 6 pieces of encouragement/positive interaction (high five, hyping them up, picking them up after a mistake, feeding them confidence) you can give one piece of criticism.

If you give too much criticism you will lose their trust.
7/ Thou shalt giveth reminders & coaching.

Once you have mastered commandments 1-6 you are ready to start giving feedback/coaching.

The most important thing in this process is doing it w/ love, care & honesty. It won’t matter what you say if you aren’t saying it the right way.
8/ Thou shalt bring massive bench energy.

Most players are hyped to play, but who are you on the bench?

Cheering from the bench shows you are unselfish, care about other's success & are willing to contribute in any way possible. Who doesn’t love playing with that teammate?
9/ Thou shalt take the blame.

When mistakes happen bad teams typically point fingers and blame each other. Great teams have players who take ownership.

Who cares if it wasn’t your fault? Own the mistake, get a touch to establish trust & move on! It's what the great ones do.
10/ Thou shalt give up what is best for you in service of what is best for the group.

Not everyone can lead the team in shots, start the game, or play the role they want. Great teammates are willing to sacrifice.
Training athletes in the art of becoming a great teammate and leader is WHAT WE DO!!!

What if I told you that one of the most under taught aspects of the game is also one of the most vital in determining your team's success?

What is it you ask?

Shot Selection

Thread ⏰ 👇👇👇
1/ Define it

If we don’t define to our players what good and bad shots are, how are they supposed to know?

The definition also can’t be simplistic or binary (good/bad), that isn’t nuanced enough.

So let’s define it with more detail.
2/ The Chart

We use a shot selection chart that was created by our founder Dick DeVenzio. Here it is:

9 - A gimme
7- Open shot in your range
5- Average shot, typically contested
3- Third grade shot/heavily contested - shot you typically see a 3rd grader throwing up

Most players train skills... & that's it.

But as coaches know — there's so much more to the game — especially for athletes who want to become complete players & compete at the highest levels.

At PGC camps, we train skills AND these 5 things.

a thread. 👇
1. BASKETBALL IQ

Great players contribute to their team in ways the average fan never notices.

However, good coaches always notice these “little things.” So, for players to become great, they need to learn these things too.
2. MINDSET

Most players play the game with little thought about their mindset.

Yet, at every level of play, a winning mindset separates average players from ‘the great ones.’

We go deep in the classroom & on court teaching players how to develop the mindset of a champion.

There is one thing great playmakers do consistently to get to the paint that average players don’t… play with CONTACT!!! Avoiding contact is a problem we see in thousands of the athletes we work with across the world every year.

We have the solution.

Time for a thread 👇👇👇
You need to think about one thing when driving to the basket if you want to play with more contact, getting sexy. Well not sexy exactly, more like SECSY.

SECSY is an acronym we use to teach athletes how to initiate and maintain contact in playmaking situations.
S: Shoulder through the hip. Open the door!! When attacking a defender you want to make a move and then get your shoulder to their hip and create a collision that will open their body up (open the door) and allow you to go by.

What if I told you that one of the most under utilized/taught skills in basketball for many players and coaches was something so simple most of us learned how to do it in grade school yet many players and coaches rarely use it?

Time for a thread 👇👇👇
As many of you may have guessed that skill is playing off two feet and using jump stops at the end of drives. There are so many situations that arise in the course of a game where a player has a massive advantage if they use a jump stop. Let’s first define the when and why.
Here are 2 easy rules to live by:
2 feet- When your shot has a chance to be blocked or bothered… go off two feet.
1 foot- When you need to be quick or clever… go off one foot.

That’s when… but why?
