Such things seem absurd, but they are not. They are the specific tools used by states power when the locus of power is a person or a authoritarian ideology.

We are full to the brim with examples of the guardrails of the law & justice being disregarded in the quest for some other outcome.
No more justifiable than these horrible examples we shudder at, maybe mock as being so regressive, in these other countries.

It is good to see how authoritarian systems function in other places where we can see the injustice and outrageous inhumanity, and absurdities.
We need to go further and realize this is what America looks like to others as we murder people for a tailight violation, roll up

We can find justifications for all of it, & soothe our conscious just as capably as these regimes are able to manage theirs.
