Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is known to make some strange substitutions and especially delayed substitutions. The manager has come under criticism for this multiple times. The argument in favor of Ole last season was that there was not enough quality on the bench to create an impact.
United have added quality to their depth. Has this impacted the substitutions Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes? Does he make the substitutions early this year? Have any of these substituted players created a notable impact in any of the games so far? In this short thread, I analyze
Ole was often known to make all/most of his changes at the same time last season. However, this season Ole tends to spread the use of substitutes very well with the manager at least making one early change as indicated by the increase in % between minute 46’ and 60’.
After the 90th minute, Ole made only 8 substitutions in the entirety of last season, however this season, he has already made 7 substitutions after the 90th minute. This indicates that, this season, Ole waits to make at least one change after the 90th minute.
Does match-state affect Ole’s decision to make substitutions?

United have had to come back and win multiple times this season. This is reflective of the fact that United have made ~50% of their substitutions when the scores were level or when they have trailed.
Ole made only 23 substitutions when the scores were level last season, he has already made 18 substitutions when the scores have been level this season. In fact the average time for Ole’s substitutions has come down to 66th minute from 59th minute.
Frequently subbed on & subbed off players

Mason Greenwood was gradually integrated into this side, with the forward being the most subbed on player by Ole in the last two seasons and unsurprisingly Martial being the most frequently ‘subbed-off’ player.
Frequently made change:

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has frequently made like-for-like changes. He isn’t someone who often changes the system by bringing in players from the bench. This is reflected in the below visualization.
Conclusion:

This season, we have more quality depth but in spite of that Ole has been very choosy in making his substitutions this season. The substitutions this season have varied better according to match situation compared to last season and are well spread out.
Future Work:

How these numbers compare with other managers/other teams will be a follow up work to this thread. How the above mentioned specific patterns change in the future is one to be closely followed.

RTs appreciated :)
