1/ One year ago, nearly every Democratic Senator said it's not a trial without witnesses. Here is a thread of nearly every Senator expressing some form of this sentiment.
2/ @AaronBlake laid out 7 types of witnesses that could shed more light "on an important event in our nation’s history — including Trump’s culpability for it." Capitol rioters themselves, Trump aides , Brad Raffensperger, Dustin Stockton, Mark Meadows, and Trump himself.
3/ @renato_mariotti presented a strong case that "to change the dynamic of the trial, House Managers will need to call witnesses." politico.com/news/magazine/…
4/ @michelleinbklyn says "the desire to rush is understandable, because Dems are sacrificing valuable legislative time. But if they miss the opportunity to give the country the fullest possible picture of Trump’s treachery, that sacrifice will be in vain." nytimes.com/2021/02/08/opi…
5/ @MrWalterShapiro says "Calling witnesses in the Senate is the best way that the trial can offer the definitive verdict on the saddest day since the Civil War as American democracy hung in the balance."
6/ @ThePlumLineGS says "The case for witnesses is strong. There’s a lot we don’t know about Trump’s behind-the-scenes conduct during the rampage: He reportedly refused entreaties to call off the mob... because he was enjoying watching it on TV."
9/ Indeed listen to what @BenSasse told @hughhewitt. We need to hear from the people the Senator was talking to in the White House, in their own voices.
10/ Will @RepRaskin call witnesses? He must. History demands it. We must not appease Donald Trump & those who committed these grievous acts by refusing to use every tactic available to expose the truth. @SenSchumer must support him. We must all demand to hear from witnesses, now.

Remember this- a year ago 49 Senators said it's not even a trial if you don't have witnesses. What about this time, when they have the majority?

1) House impeachment managers plan to use video evidence substantially in next week's trial.
nytimes.com/2021/02/07/us/…
2) I predict not all of the video will be from January 6th. While it reached a fevered pitch on January 6th and the days after the election, Trump’s false claims started long before. He was explicit about the "stolen election" narrative from last summer.
3) @rgoodlaw and I analyzed dozens of hours of Parler videos of the events of January 6th at the US Capitol. They reveal the psychology of the crowd, and how its violent behavior was a direct result Trump’s rhetoric. justsecurity.org/74335/fight-fo…

In reviewing video from January 6th, a propaganda reel that played just before Trump came on stage at the rally on the Ellipse stood out. I helped @rgoodlaw and @jasonintrator pull the frames to review closely. Jason, an expert on fascism, produced this: justsecurity.org/74504/movie-at…
This video has been used before in prior campaign events in 2020. But its use on this day stands out because of the severity of the message. The first frames focus "our attention on this supposedly 'globalist,' but really Jewish, threat," as Jason writes.
"The next clip lingers on Joe Biden, with a vacant stare in his eyes and the video footage slowed, while Trump’s inauguration speech plays, 'For too long, a small group in our nation’s capital has reaped the rewards of government, while the people have borne the cost.'"

So many terrifying moments depicted in the videos the January 6th Parler dataset. Struck in particular by the invective in this one against @senatemajldr McConnell- in addition to Nancy Pelosi- in this scene, where insurrectionists are attempting push past police in riot gear.
In this video, I believe of the same standoff, protestors are seen teargassing the police.
In this video, a protestor is heard yelling again and again "we were invited here"... "We were invited here by the President of the United States!"

1/ I believe I am in total alignment with @EthanZ on this issue. As I've discussed in most detail with @emilybell, many of us working on tech and media issues, especially disinfo, spend our time looking at the workings of.... tech and media. This obscures the real problem...
2/ It is not so much that there is disinformation layered on top of the information ecosystem that is perverting democratic systems and hurting society. There is disinformation UNDER the information ecosystem itself. Many of our core ideas are in fact... disinformation.
3/ These include ideas about how our economy works, how power works, what democratic societies (here and now) are for and about, and of course issues of race, gender, sexuality. Disinformation is the medium- it is not a virus in the petri dish, it is the dish.

In this video by a Parler user, Alex Jones can be heard telling demonstrators marching towards the Capitol that Trump is also en route to other side of the Capitol. Someone screams, "Storm the Capitol!" projects.propublica.org/parler-capitol…
"Trump's speech is over... it went over all the voter fraud, I am very concerned about Mike Pence.... did not love the way the President talked about that, we're walking over to the Capitol right now, maybe we'll break down the doors." projects.propublica.org/parler-capitol…
Alex Jones again: "Tell everyone you know- go to the other side of the Capitol, that is where Trump is going to be." projects.propublica.org/parler-capitol…
