One year ago today, BART launched its Ambassador program to increase trained, uniformed & unarmed personnel in its system.

They provide many services, such as giving free face masks, safety tips, directions, and connecting those in crisis with services.
In the past year, BART Ambassadors have tallied the following statistics:

▪️12,000 educational contacts (most frequent type of contact)
▪️~10,000 rider checks on platforms
▪️1,000+ free face masks handed to riders
▪️132 cases where police officers was called for assistance
In the past year, 10 ambassadors -- working in teams of 2 -- walk trains and stations, report to safety and security concerns or biohazards, and respond to customers’ questions or service requests. Ambassadors are uniformed and trained in de-escalation techniques.
Ambassadors cover many languages spoken by BART's ridership, from Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog, Cambodian, and Farsi.

Ambassador Brandon Fenwick’s Spanish skills proved lifesaving once when he and his partner persuaded a man in need to step out the trackway at Glen Park Station. Ambassador Brandon Fenwick, at Fruitvale Station.
Ambassadors will be a central part of a new Bureau of Progressive Policing and Community Engagement, which will include 10 police officers with specialized training and 20 new Crisis Intervention Specialists. They’ll focus on connecting those found on BART in need with services.

Starting Tuesday, February 16, BART will offer a free ticket back home to those who have been vaccinated at the Oakland Coliseum vaccination site.

The site, which opens on Feb 16, is jointly led by @fema and @Cal_OES. BART is ready to support their efforts to vaccinate Bay Area. Image
Starting February 16, extra BART staff will be deployed to Coliseum Station to provide anyone who received a vaccine a free $7 BART ticket on-site after showing their vaccination card with a matching date.

$7 is enough fare to get back home to any BART station, except SFO. Image
We know it can be a long walk from Coliseum Station to the Coliseum.

BART staff is working to secure ensure riders with mobility challenges or disabilities will receive accommodations getting between Coliseum Station and the vaccination site for their vaccination. Image

Happy Monday, Bay Area!

BART continues to provide weekly train car loading charts on bart.gov/crowding & social media. The charts provide a snapshot of what riders can expect on-board trains this week.

Yellow & Blue lines for 2/8/21-2/12/21 ImageImageImageImage
Since June, the charts have been posted on bart.gov/crowding every week.

How to use it: Look up your line, station and then departure time. The # in the box is the expected average # of riders on each car at departure of station.

Red and Green lines, 2/8/21-2/12/21 ImageImageImageImage
Important notes about the data in these charts:

-Reflects average # of riders on each car as the train departs each station
-Assumes passengers are evenly spread through all cars on a train
-Is not real-time information

▪️79% say they can socially distance their entire trip, 16% say they can for part of their ride and 4% say they can't
▪️Riders rated our COVID response above average
The results are encouraging and serve as an incentive for us to work even harder.

The results give us guidance on where we need to focus more attention and resources: enhancing cleaning efforts, increasing the presence of safety staff, and keeping trains running as frequently.

For years, elected reps, advocates and passengers have envisioned a NorCal region connected by a rail network prioritizing efficiency & equity.

Today BART & @CapitolCorridor are taking a major step to realize the vision. Say hello to the #Link21 Program! link21program.org Aerial photo of BART and Capitol Corridor trains at Richmond
Link21 is a multiyear Program to create an integrated rail network for a growing 21-county Northern California Megaregion.

#Link21 will optimize existing rail networks and new rail projects to increase capacity and reliability – such as a new transbay rail crossing. Map of 21 counties in Northern California taken into account
What does an integrated rail network in Northern California with #Link21 look like?

It can mean:
- More destinations within 1-hr radius by rail
- More direct connections
- Reduced wait times
- Extended BART service hours
- And more! Map of Bay Area regional transit services

Ventilation in an enclosed setting like a train car is critical in preventing spread of COVID-19.

BART train cars replace air about every 70 seconds, far more often than an office or store.

Now BART will begin using denser air filters across its fleet to buff its ventilation.
In August, BART announced a pilot program to test a denser MERV-14 filter to catch microscopic air particles. Previously, BART used a MERV-8 filter.

After six months of tests, BART will be transitioning to using MERV-14 filters on all its train cars.

What's the difference between a MERV-14 and MERV-8 filter?

MERV-14, left, has more folds. MERV-8 filters, right, could trap particles between 3 and 10 microns in size; the new MERV-14’s can capture much smaller particles between .3 and 1 microns.

Immediate repair work to begin on traction power cables between North Berkeley and El Cerrito Plaza stations. No service impacts expected. Learn more: bddy.me/2MuqpYx
We want those that live near our tracks between the North Berkeley and El Cerrito Plaza stations to know
there will be construction activities under our aerial trackway during the day and night with the potential of noise and light impacts from the work.
This critical infrastructure provides power for our trains from the high voltage switching substation and supports redundancy for this portion of the BART system. The equipment is essential for ensuring reliable train service between North Berkeley and the Richmond Yard.
