The much awaited 'Economics of Biodiversity' report or the 'Dasgupta Review' is out.

In this massive report, page number 367 has a small footnote which reads: "If the average North American diet was adopted globally, 178% of current agricultural land would be required to feed

the world’s population, whereas if the average Indian diet was adopted, only 55% of current agricultural land would be required."

The journal reference for this footnote is : Peter Alexader et al, Human appropriation of land for food:

The role of diet, Global Environmental Change Volume 41, November 2016, Pages 88-98

The paper introduces 'an index for the Human Appropriation of Land for Food (HALF)' and states if the world.

Then the paper studies the agricultural land use area requirements if the global population adopts consumption patterns pertaining to current national per capita rate. There is a possibility of 14-fold range variation.

The abstract reads: "Exploration of the average diets in the USA and India (which lie towards but not at global consumption extremes) provides a framework for understanding land use impacts arising from different food consumption habits. Hypothetically,

if the world were to adopt the average Indian diet, 55% less agricultural land would be needed to satisfy demand, while global consumption of the average USA diet would necessitate 178% more land." The paper itself is behind paywall and subscription.

Notice the year. 2016. That is when the hype and propaganda about fake beef lynching happened. Apart from demonizing the BJP politically, the popular Indian food culture too was attacked. Beef parties were organized and it became the fashion statement of the pseudo-progressives.

In 2017 Congress storm-troopers in Kerala even beheaded in public a calf.

But none cared to talk about this aspect of Indian food culture. Any lit-fest talk on food culture would demonise the 'Brahminical food culture'.

The beef taboos and moderation (not banning) of the non-veg food intake in Hindu food culture get attacked as 'Brahminical suppression.'

All the while this report has been there. More the world adapts Hindu food culture,

(I am not talking about going vegetarian but the Hindu food culture with its in built moderation and reverence to life epitomized in cow veneration), the more the planet gets healed for humanity and more we stop habitat destruction.

The Vedic call 'कृण्वन्तो विश्वमार्यम्' is today more relevant and more urgent as a mission, than ever before.
