A thread on pornography addiction in white evangelical churches, oversimplification of knowledge and growth, and why it's hard for these communities to deal with sexual predators like Ravi Zacharias: threadreaderapp.com/thread/1360618…
@socofthesacred - a thread on how evangelical models of knowledge and growth perpetuate pornography addiction, even in attempts to people who are struggling; and how this leads to an inability to recognize and respond to sexual predators like @RaviZacharias
Postscript: To borrow a metaphor from Jeremy Begbie to think about the Mind of the Spirit vs the Mind of the Flesh in Rom 8 and apply it to well-intententioned but misguided ways that churches try to help people struggling with sex addiction (or just about any other struggle):
It's like the Mind of the Spirit & the Mind of the Flesh are two songs playing in the same room on separate sound systems. Good formation helps you turn up the music from the Mind of the Spirit & turn down the competing music of the Mind of the Flesh.
Malformation trains us to do the opposite. False gospels are dangerous b/c they attempt to appropriate everything good that comes from the Mind of the Spirit and attribute it to the Mind of the Flesh, teaching us to rely on the Mind of the Flesh in the ultimate bait-and-switch.
It's like adding a third sound system that is powered by the same source as the Mind of the Flesh, but it plays music that counterfeits the melody and lyrics of the song of the Mind of the Spirit.
If followed, the music of the false gospel confuses the believer as to which music is coming from the Mind of the Spirit and which is coming from the Mind of the Flesh.
They might try to turn up the volume on the false gospel song, only to find that this turns up power on the Mind of the Flesh song and increases their struggles.
The Mind of the Spirit song either gets drowned out or the volume gets turned down anytime it suggests another way because it's lyrics now sound "unbiblical" according to the false gospel song.
It doesn't mean the struggling person isn't a real Christian. It just means that they have become enslaved again the flesh by submitting to a false gospel in their efforts to know and obey God.
Also, credit for this metaphor goes to Douglas Campbell, who develops Begbie's musical metaphor to discuss Romans 8 in "Pauline Dogmatics."

My husband I took a couple of flights yesterday & he explained to me yesterday evening that he now wears his “Have you arted today?” t shirt when he travels because it wins him good will with people who initially think it says “Have you farted today?”
As an autistic women, I put in a huge amount of energy into camouflaging my social difficulties, which are MUCH worse at airports, only to find out that a t-shirt that elliptically alludes to farting is all that it takes to unlock near universal good will.
Of course I noticed that people were engaging in friendly chit chat with Paul, but couldn’t hear the interactions & assumed that Paul, who looks like a grizzly bear that is probably COVERED with tattoos under his shirt, is just so approachable & likable.

Given that Bishop Orji of the ACNA’s initial public comment on the announcement of the Wood presentment in Anglican Ink was to reflexively slander the authors, I am skeptical that he forms his judgments on the basis of anything other than what he wants to be true. Image
Bishop Orji’s public comment, since deleted, was originally posted on Facebook in response to this October 21 Anglican Ink article here:

Notice how very freely ACNA bishops rush to use their platforms to publicly make proclamations on high stakes topics which they have not bothered to inform themselves about with anything approaching due diligence, even as clergy & laity are shamed for making their concerns public

For those following @ianshapira 's coverage in
@washingtonpost of @The_ACNA 's patterns of covering up abuse, note that in addition to the four articles published in this month & last, there was this major article in Jan. featuring @TheFallsChurch
wapo.st/47ONJpU x.com/jeffreyhwalton…
The reason that the @washingtonpost is covering @The_ACNA at all is because survivors of Jeff Taylor & their advocates approached Mr. Shapira about the egregious mishandling of a child sexual predator case at that @TheFallsChurch.

washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/inter…
@washingtonpost @The_ACNA @TheFallsChurch The alleged predator, Jeff Taylor, was allowed to float around multiple churches after leaving TFCA, including other now ACNA & ACNA adjacent churches. archive.ph/36DzE

If you were a priest who had been bullied & spiritually abused by your bishop, would you go to a bishop you knew and trusted for help, or to a stranger?

Does your own bishop have more of a responsibility to act, or less?
If you are the bishop of one of the largest, wealthiest, and most powerful diocese in the ACNA, do you have more of a responsibility to throw your weight around when your fellow bishops prove to be corrupt, or less?
If you run for election as bishop in a year in which your denomination is embroiled in a major abuse mishandling crisis that clearly indicates inadequate structures in your denomination, are you or are you not on notice that you need to understand how to respond to abuse well?

This is a terrible way to say "I was weak and cowardly and decided to let a sexual misconduct survivor and spiritual abuse survivors under my care who have less power & responsibility than me carry the burden of fighting off the wolves by themselves."

#ACNApocalypse @ianshapira
Also a weird way to say "I let these survivors of abuse be slandered by other bishops for supposedly not going to the bishops for help or Trusting The Process when I knew very well they had asked for help because I was one of the bishops who left them in a ditch."
Also a terrible way to say "I'm sorry."

Is @The_ACNA going for some sort of chiastic structure in which the three prosecutors for the Ruch trial will be paralleled by three Archbishops/acting Archbishops in rapid succession?

anglicanchurch.net/news-and-updat…On November 7, 2025, to ensure the utmost objectivity in these proceedings, Bishop Sutton formally recused himself from all matters pertaining to Archbishop Wood’s Board of Inquiry and any subsequent disciplinary process that may result. Bishop Sutton appointed Bishop Dobbs to form a 3-member panel of bishops to represent the Dean of the Province in any action he may be permitted or required to take in the investigation of allegations made against Archbishop Wood. This panel will review and approve the composition of the Board of Inquiry to ensure its impartiality and receive its report.
Dean of the College Ray Sutton has recused himself from all disciplinary processes related to Wood because apparently being accused of colluding to stack a Board of Inquiry to be Bishop Friendly is a lil' oopsie rather than an "I resign" scenario.

wapo.st/43ObygsWood’s fear of a presentment led him to what Gross considered a major ethical breach. While he was on staff, Gross said, he heard a “credible report” that Wood and Ray Sutton — the bishop assuming the archbishop’s duties during Wood’s leave of absence — had a conversation about a possible presentment. In their discussion, they were “floating the possibility” of a “bishop-friendly” Board of Inquiry, according to Gross’s affidavit. Gross told The Post that he was appalled. He said he believed they were considering stacking a future Board of Inquiry with clergy and parishioners inherently defe...
As is the public allegations that Sutton mishandled abuse in the most Bill Gothard possible way when approached for help by JAFC chaplains.
