1/ Some context for people who don't follow comic book movies.
When DC Studios wanted to build a universe rivalling Marvel, @ZackSnyder was the man they put in charge.

2/ The movies that @ZackSnyder made were very different from the light-toned Marvel movies that people had come to expect.
3/ The second movie that @ZackSnyder made, Batman v Superman, was bashed by critics and did not do well at the box office.
4/ Later on, it came into light that the version released in theatres was heavily edited. The studio wanted the movie to be less than 2 hours so as to increase the number of shows per day.
5/ Months later, Warner Bros released the uncut version of Batman v Superman that @ZackSnyder wanted to release.

6/ Moving on to Justice League, Warner Bros were desperate for this to become a Billion Dollar success. They were convinced that Zack Snyder's tone wouldn't be able to deliver that.
7/ Months before Justice League's release date, Warner Bros announced that Zack Snyder would be stepping away from Justice League and Avengers director Joss Whedon would be taking over.
8/They also announced there would be extensive reshoots by Joss Whedon. This came as shock to a lot of fans because of the difference in styles of the two directors.
9/ In November 2017, Justice League finally released in movie theatres. It bombed at the Box Office. Critics and fans hated it. It looked like a half baked movie with amateur CGI.
10/ Rumours then started to appear on Reddit and other forums about another version of the movie. The version which Zack Snyder had shot. Soon we had members of the crew acknowledging the existence of this movie.
11/ DC movie fans started a petition which demanded that Warner Bros release the original version of the movie. This was where #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement started. This petition got 100,000 signatures in 5 days!
12/ Over the next two years, this gained more momentum. Fans raised money money to hire a plane that had #ReleaseTheSnyderCut banners.
They bought a Times Square billboard. #ReleaseTheSnyderCut took all the attention from any Warner Bros events.

13/ Still, the possibility of Zack Snyder's version of Justice League getting a release was very slim because it would cost Warner Bros atleast $30 Million to add finishing touches to the movie.
14/ On the two-year anniversary of Justice League (November 2019), the movement just exploded. Member of the original cast including @GalGadot and @BenAffleck tweeted pictures of the movies with #ReleaseTheSnyderCut
15/ By now, #ReleaseTheSnyderCut became the most-tweeted hashtag about something that Warner Bros ever made, and the movie wasn't released.
16/ The next morning, Zack and Deborah Snyder got a call from their agent saying that the chairman of Warner Bros was willing to give-in to the movement. He wanted to know if they would consider working on the original version!
17/ In February 2020 Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder put together a presentation to Warner Bros. The folks from the studio were excited about this.
18/ Finally on May 20, 2020 at a virtual screening of Man of Steel, Zack Snyder announced that the SnyderCut of Justice League would release on HBO Max. The movie is scheduled to come out on 18 March, 2021
