In the Feudal Ages, the Church had a monopoly over morality & information flow. With scribes to create thought and the swords of patronized & faithful feudal lords to enforce it.
The New York Times is one of the new "Churches" as the creators of a new mass morality, a religion.
The scribes are academics who create and capture the flow of knowledge. Their credentials are propped up and reinforced by "churches" - NYT, WashPo, etc. What they say is published, as long as they adhere to their predecessors and patrons.
Diverge and they face ostracization.
The lords and kings are the various institutions and corporations who will destroy your livelihood if you blaspheme and will not hesitate to send their attack dogs/lead serfs at you if you deviate from the mind of the Church.
The lead serfs or "first amongst equals" play hall monitor amongst the regular folk. Journalists who toe the line, "woke" tech personnel, & psychopath activists rest in this category and answer the call of their lords to harass & break those who Think Different.
The internet is the printing press, but Big Tech is trying to capture all the printing presses. Only what they believe can be printed. & many of them are hand in hand with The Church. Just check out recommended topics/explore on Social Media & what tone they play.
Below is what the Church did as a reaction to the spread of the printing press:
How did the Church/old kings' power crumble? Technology.
The printing press challenged the scribes, gunpowder challenged the swords.
Gunpowder's cost & effectiveness vs the old metal-clad king meant an uptick in wealth for merchants who could provide that decentralized tech.
Decentralized tech will begin its battle against both Big Tech & the Church. (tbh - I consider Clubhouse potential Big Tech, again just look at its suggested topics & who controls the choke points of said topics).
Substack could go that way too.
There must be another way...
There are so many echoes of today in this book written in the 90s. The parallels to history are unnerving.
Big Tech censorship and de-platforming along with blatant 0.0001%er tantrums forcing manipulation of a mass-market movement is reallyyyyy pushing me into the "decentralization" camp at least in private affairs (I still support strong nation-states).
Problem may be when cryptocurrency faces off vs national currencies but imo they can coexist together...possibly even in competition? Imagine the deflationary effects there!
I don't think gov can truly master cyberspace at this point which is why I think coexistence will happen
My prior is that I own cryptocurrency as well as am currently in the US stock market. Those are my skin in the game biases.
I get a good deal of the deeper theological aspects of Hinduism from irl Sanskrit scholars who are Hindu practitioners. A number of these have studied at Ivy leagues and/or in Indian Sanskrit academies. I asked them about their view on the below episode regarding Supreme Godhead.
They point out the Bhagavad Gita as a pivotal moment in all of Hindu theology. And I wonder if others agree with their postulation:
The Bhagavad Gita was a moment when Paramatma (Absolute Supreme Godhead) spoke directly to Arjun, thereby classifying it as Shruti vs Smriti.
Some sects believe Krishna is Paramatma himself. Others say it's Vishnu so he was speaking through Krishna always. Others say Paramatma is completely nirgun and even the Trimurti only capture aspects of Paramatma, so avatars couldn't capture his full glory. Other interps too...
The Swedish model's collapse was eye-opening to see, especially as people propped it up as another Nordic godsend.
OTOH CV death rate seems abysmally low yet still has the potential to overwhelm hospitals at a terrifying scale if virality spikes.
I just don't know what to think
Lockdown is something I've accepted (I don't mind remote work and my gym is open so idc). But I know it can be crushing for some people, especially small biz owners and workers. Which is why I am much more empathetic towards relief and hate the dilly-dallying in Congress.
