I’ve been interested in wrestling in Wigan for years, and read about it pretty extensively. And finally, I’ve decided to take it to the next level by the way of proper research.
There’s a lot of things to cover, in the main covering 1850s to 1950s.
Having read about a number of wrestlers - I intend to cover - I thought one of the most important things to start research in to was the venue(s) that matches were held.
From my early findings it appears that one of the biggest places for matches was Ince Recreation Ground.
Which, like much of the town, has been lost. In its place stands Ince CE Primary School.
Fascinating that in the 1800s, thousands of Wiganers would spectate wrestling matches, and maybe make a bob or two.
Acton, or ‘Limey Joe’ (shown in my bio), was one of Wigan’s best and became a huge name in early US wrestling - fighting big matches at the original @TheGarden - and died aged 65 in 1917, in Portland Oregon.
