More than 3,500 service members have earned the Medal of Honor, but less than a hundred have been to African-Americans.

No Medal of Honors were awarded to African Americans during WWI or WWII. They were awarded decades later.
2/ In the early 1990s, the Army worked with Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C., to determine if any racial disparity was present during the process of considering Medals of Honor for black troops.
3/ The investigation determined that seven African-American soldiers should have received the Medal of Honor during World War II.

Their Medal of Honors were delayed by bias and discrimination.

Two African-Americans received the Medal of Honor for actions in World War I. Both were awarded decades after their deaths.

Cpl Freddie Stowers & Sgt Henry Johnson
2/ Cpl Freddie Stowers
Stowers's Medal of Honor was presented on 24 Apr 1991, 73 years after he was KIA.

Stowers made the ultimate sacrifice for his country, but remained an obscure figure who was not given his due until nearly a century after his death.
3/ Sgt Henry Johnson
Johnson's Medal of Honor was presented on 2 Jun 2015, 85 years after he died.

In 1918, racism against African Americans was common among white U.S. soldiers in the U.S. military, but French attitudes differed.
