Texas' power grid was moments away from a catastrophic failure that could have left us in the dark for months.
Climate change is real. The consequences of ignoring that fact are here.
Millions of Texans have been without power and water for nearly a week in freezing weather. And instead of taking ownership and leading us out of this crisis, @GregAbbott_TX sat around pointing fingers at everything from wind turbines to the Green New Deal.
Unfortunately, storms like this won’t be once in a lifetime but will become a more common occurrence. We need to prepare.
Texas faces massive climate risk including worsening droughts, stronger hurricanes, wildfires, heat waves, and tragically, even deadly cold spells and ice storms.
If we had planned for climate change as some legislators have consistently proposed in every legislative session for over a decade, we might have been better prepared.
Abbott even said he isn’t sure if climate change is real because he says he is “not a scientist.” We aren’t demanding our Governor to be a scientist, but we do expect him to use common sense.
We do demand he take the recommendations of the experts that have warned time and again for the state of Texas to prepare its power grid for increased need due to the forces of climate change.
