In college, had early 80s mix that people already found kitschy in mid 80s
Jessie’s Girl/ Centerfold/ 867-5309/ Come On Eileen/ Safety Dance/ Our House/I Ran/ Tainted Love/Don’t You Want Me/ I Love Rock n Roll/ Jack & Diane.
Even by 85, people thought it was so “retro.”
Sweet Dreams/ 99 Luftballoons/ What I like about You/ Hungry Like the Wolf/True
Mind you, some of these songs are only 3 years old in 86. But people were already “ That’s so high school!”
We were very post-modern at Brown.
Creating instant nostalgia.
Too Shy/ Karma Chameleon/ Turning Japanese/ In a Big Country were all on early 80s mix. Maybe The Warrior. Maybe People are People. I wish All Night Long, but I feel it was mostly new wave. If you went to a Brown Psi party between 85 to 88 let me know what I’m missing.
I can’t believe I’ve hijacked my own wedding thread & pivoted to my early 80s mix. But Also:
White wedding
Rock the casbah
Goody two shoes
Down under
Wake me up before you go go
Whip it
Always something there to remind me
Poison arrow
Do I need to go find my box of cassettes
Silly Bryan. The big finish at any hour was always Total Eclipse of the Heart.
Others on my early 80s college mix:
Der Komissar
Saved by Zero
Kids in America
Putting on the Ritz
One Night in Bangkok
Cum on Feel the Noize
Just Got Lucky
Just can’t get enough.

Did you know there was a week when Chuck Berry had the number 1 song in US, Elvis Presley was number 2, and Rick Nelson was 7? And this wasn’t 1957. It was October... 1972! Thus began my daylong deep dive into the the 50s Rock and Roll Revival of the 70s.
The deep-dive included usual suspects like American Graffiti, Grease, Happy Days, Sha Na Na @ Woodstock, Elvis comeback special. But also included the Richard Nader revival shows that started at Felt Forum but grew to sell out Madison Square Garden.
I was even shocked to learn that there are other people equally obsessed with the topic who best me to it. Bless them. scrammagazine.com/2016/02/25/yes…
It ain't no use to sit & wonder why babe
It don't matter anyhow
And it ain't no use to sit & wonder why babe
If you don't know by now
When yr rooster crows @ the breaks of dawn
Look out your window & I'll be gone
You're the reason I'm traveling on
Don't think twice it's all right
“Blue-jean baby
L.A. lady
Seamstress for the band
Pretty-eyed
Pirate smile
You'll marry a music man
Ballerina
You must've seen her
Dancing in the sand
And now she's in me
Always with me
Tiny dancer in my hand”
“Maybe you'll wanna give me kisses sweet
But only for one night with no repeat
And maybe you'll go away and never call
And a taste of honey is worse that none at all
Oh little girl
In that case I don't want no part
I do believe that that would only break my heart”
“Look out of any window
Any morning, any evening, any day
Maybe the sun is shining
Birds are winging or rain is falling from a heavy sky
What do you want me to do
To do for you to see you through?
For this is all a dream we dreamed
One afternoon long ago.”
“ I hold you in my arms as the band plays
What are those words whispered, baby, just as you turn away
I saw you last night out on the edge of town
I wanna read your mind to know just what I've got in this new thing I've found”
“Well, they blew up the chicken man in Philly last night
And they blew up his house, too
Down on the boardwalk, they're getting ready for a fight
Gonna see what them racket boys can do
Now there's trouble busing in from out of state
And the D.A. can't get no relief”
“Livin' on the road, my friend
Was gonna keep you free and clean
And now you wear your skin like iron
And your breath is hard as kerosene
Weren't you mamma's only boy?
Her favorite one it seems
She began to cry when you said goodbye
Sank to your dreams.”
“Tom, get your plane right on time
I know your part'll go fine
Fly down to Mexico
Doh-n-doh-de-doh-n-doh
And here I am
The only living boy in New Yor
“In the timbers of Fennario, the wolves are running round
The winter was so hard and cold, froze ten feet 'neath the ground
Don't murder me, I beg of you, don't murder me
Please, don't murder me”
“Well, I woke up Sunday morning
With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad
So I had one more for dessert”
I also love:
“Gone are the days when the ox fall down,
Take up the yoke and plow the fields around. Gone are the days when the ladies said' "Please,
Gentle Jack Jones won't you come to me."
Brown-eyed women and red grenadine,
The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean.”
Also:
“Well it's Saturday night
You're all dressed up in blue
I been watching you awhile
Maybe you been watching me too
So somebody ran out
Left somebody's heart in a mess
Well if you're looking for love
Honey I'm tougher than the rest “
