Ask An Epidemiologist: Do I Need To Double Mask? feat. @MonicaGandhi9

It’s a good idea in some situations such as indoors. But a cloth mask with a filter works just as well.

How effective is double masking in protecting people from COVID-19?

@MonicaGandhi9: I wrote an article with @linseymarr ...The best option is a disposable surgical mask plus a cloth mask on top. That combo really looked like it blocked as much as an N95 gothamist.com/news/ask-epide…
Are there any alternatives to double masking besides the N95?

@MonicaGandhi9: We also looked at another type of mask, which is a cloth mask with a pocket for a filter inside...

...layering one cloth mask on top of another does nothing. It just makes it harder to talk.
How often should you switch out the filter in that type of mask?

You should change it out every time you wash the mask, which should be every other day. gothamist.com/news/ask-epide…
In what scenarios should people consider double masking?

@MonicaGandhi9: It does not have to be everywhere. This is really for indoors, for adults, and usually in places that are crowded. gothamist.com/news/ask-epide…
@MonicaGandhi9: We have a paper coming out introducing the concept of the complementary triangle of non-pharmaceutical interventions...
@MonicaGandhi9: One corner of the triangle is masks, another corner is social distancing, and the third corner is ventilation. If you have less of one, you need more of another. gothamist.com/news/ask-epide… Image

NYC Reveals White New Yorkers Have Received Lion's Share Of COVID-19 Vaccine Doses

White NYC residents are taking about three times as much COVID-19 vaccine as Blacks and Latinos

The disparity holds when you look at the overall number of doses administered (👇) and when you adjust for the population makeup for the city. gothamist.com/news/white-new… via @WNYC/@Gothamist
Contrary to what you would want to happen, the racial and ethnic disparities ***widen*** when you look at older adults over 65 (who are more likely to suffer severe consequences and thus have a greater need for the vaccine). gothamist.com/news/white-new…
