@commaficionado Okay. Let me say something, because I’m about to get really angry.

For a few months, I worked at a home for adults with severe learning disabilities. One of the residents was autistic, amongst other things. 1/

@commaficionado He could get violent. If he was surprised, if his routine was disrupted, and so on. The triggers were obvious for anyone who knew anything about autism. 2/

@commaficionado When this happened, we knew the signs. A particular kind of stim meant that he was about to kick off. 3/

@commaficionado So what did we do?

We left the room. We made sure he couldn’t get to us or the other residents until he had calmed down. 4/

@commaficionado We NEVER physically restrained him. We never even locked the door of the room he was in. It was even against regulations to do so. 5/

@commaficionado There are other ways, but these people aren’t thinking about them because they aren’t thinking about the autistic.
