One of the most enjoyable programmes I've implemented during my time as a coach. Maybe you can take some ideas from, 'Tall & Tiny Footballers.'
Sessions encouraged adults to join in the fun and create a positive learning environment for the children ⚽️🏃♀️
Initially reviewing some of our programmes for roughly 3 to 5 year olds, I found:
▪️ Coaches having difficulty engaging the group
▪️ More 'sit' and 'listen' than 'run' and 'fun'
▪️ Lace tying, bathroom breaks and babysitting
▪️ Coaches stressed when they should be smiling
Education was key. Taster sessions with parents, carers or older siblings solidified my belief that children take a lot more on board by copying than listening!
Adults were not in the sessions to coach their children, they were there to play! And the children quickly copied.
Adults throughout were encouraged to display positive behaviours such as:
Engaging in games - Listening to coaches - Treat equipment and everyone with respect
Plenty of FREE play throughout sessions. Amazing to facilitate adults and children sharing an interest.
Engaging adults early in the journey can allow for a smoother transition when the child joins a team or moves to the next programme. It's an opportunity to discuss being a positive role model at this age, but then embracing the next phase of giving them independence and space
We even started a Tall & Tiny Transition programme.
Taking the sessions to primary school children who would act as the positive role models for nursery pupils to aid their transition into the school. I can't stress how much I enjoyed these sessions!!
Some feedback from the Tall & Tiny Footballers programme😀
Session structure tended to be:
▪️ Free play
▪️ Fun intro activity (like tag games)
▪️ A couple of games built around a story (cars, pirates, etc)
▪️ Free play
▪️ Fun exit activity (what's the time wolf, duck duck goose)
Main aim: they come back
I can't stress how blown away I was by how quickly the children picked up dribbling and turning just by following the lead of the positive role models in their lives.
Thanks to everyone who was involved in the programme, I loved every minute and hopefully the children did too.
