The bright spot in the pandemic: A near cessation of another viral infection that's been persistent for millennia.

Just 1 influenza-associated pediatric death in the U.S. this winter. Just 1.

During the 2019-20 and 2018-19 seasons, there were 188 flu-caused pediatric deaths each year — all time highs.

cdc.gov/flu/spotlights…
During 2019-20, there were an estimated 24,000-62,000 flu deaths, 410,000-740,000 flu hospitalizations, 39-56 million flu illnesses.

This year, you have a better chance of knowing someone who's died from COVID than who's been hospitalized for the flu.

I haven't seen the data, but I'm willing to bet that a fair percentage of the flu deaths during 2020-21 were shortly after the previous tracking year, which ended April 4, 2020.

There were some flu hospitalizations this past winter, so not completely eliminated.
One interesting fact of the flu is that it travels each year from Northern to Southern Hemisphere, and then back again, evolving as it spreads & travels. It's unlikely it'll ever be eliminated, but it's nice to have a reprieve.
