1) “a regime, in which women live so luxuriously, men necessarily value highly and desire wealth, so that they can thereby satisfy the pleasure of women, which requires large expenses. And the fact that they care greatly about wealth does a great deal to destroy morals”
2) “if most citizens should
be forced to abstain too much from women, they then fall into a shameful vice, namely, homosexuality,”
3) “women, because they
lived pleasurably, became presumptuous and wanted to intrude themselves into all things, so that women managed many things even regarding governance of the political community [and] the political community is badly governed, since women lack reason.”
4) “women became arrogant and bold for the sake of pleasure. And boldness can be of no use in the political community for daily affairs (i.e., local occupations) but only for war, and yet the boldness of these women was harmful even in this regard.“
From St. Thomas Aquinas’ commentary on Aristotle’s discussion of the fall of Sparta. It seems to be very much what we are experiencing today.
The solution to these problems, according to St. Thomas and Aristotle seems to be education of women regarding...
...“obedience and abstinence from pleasure, and perseverance in works and painful things.”
He also mentions that “Lycurgus tried to bring the women back to the right instruction of the laws. But the women completely resisted because of their wicked habits.“
