My husband just spent 48 hr at the hospital due to something he ate. He got there by ambulance (Good times). He is now randomly coughing and I’ve lost hope in health care. Here’s a thread on why:
Ambulance staff put a mask on him and were double masked. From here, badness.
1/
The hospital is allowing guests. Because it’s so cold outside they aren’t doing temperature checks at the die. Since I had the insurance card, in I went, double masked.
And I find my husband without a mask.
2/
The staff were mostly in surgical masks w gaps & a lot of men had beards made fits worse.
But there were exceptions, like the doctor with a weirdly mutalated n95 that was puckered with clear channels beside his nose, and the tech whose bedazzled mask kept slipping down nose.
3/
But like he needs to be there and racing at ER staff about masks was not in my to do list.
When they transferred him to a room, no mask for the cross hospital trip. Nope. None. Also no covid test.
I went home here.
4/
I had to take him stuff like glasses the next day. They do a random wavy temp check with scanner but is just come in from 30deg. Heads up. Still all gapped surgical masks. Give him stuff and visit. He has no mask. Room door kept open mostly to hall. Visitors allowed.
5/
On my way out, I asked if the hospital had covid patients in the other wing. The very nice nurse says yea, but sometimes the miss people and they end up in the regular wing, but never on purpose... they aren’t testing unless symptomatic!
At the hospital.
6/
The nurse went in to say, “I just tell people covid is every where now and you really can’t avoid it.”
I told her I’d left the house less then 10x in the last year because of my lungs and I just walked away.
7/
He came home today. They did mask him to leave, then left him standing at the curb while I got the car. He gets in & asks if he can take off the mask that is precariously balanced on his beard doing nothing & I say yes.
He then goes on to say his throat tickles like a cough.
8/
I was double masked & pretty much stayed masked unless in my studio. He is unmasked & randomly coughing & doesn’t want to wear a mask. I can live in the studio. This is my life for the next two weeks because the hospital showed example that masks aren’t that important.

Ps apologies for all the typos. Angry typing on my phone brings out the worst in my proofreading.

I’ve been ready through @doctorow’s “Makers” for the past several weeks. (I stopped tweeting about it once I was a good way in because joining part way in is very hard).
Tonight, watching the world burn, I struggled with “do I read or do I admit I’m broken??”
1/n
@doctorow Thing is, I had to ask myself, if I didn’t go online and read, what was I going to spend my night doing? Scrolling thru Twitter? Playing Animal Crossing? Both? Probably both. That doesn’t exactly put anything positive into the world.
It is privilege to sit & do nothing.
2/n
@doctorow So I did the adult thing and ate an entire pizza and then shovelled myself out of my chair and went to the studio to read.
Tonight we were starting part III of this novel. I had no idea what to expect. The gap between Part I and II and been years.
3/n
1 - I’m going to listen to books the rest of the day because the news is hurting my brain.
2 - Folks are talking about how our economy is going to tank in part because we offshored our industry.
3 - I’m going to out myself as a long time dem socialist before continuing.

Back when I started college in 1992, I was an international relations major in @jmcmsu. As part of our election-year course work we read the latest books by @paulkrugman & @RBReich, Bush & Clinton’s economic advisors. This had 3 out of the classroom effects on me.
/1
@jmcmsu@paulkrugman@RBReich 1st impact was perhaps silly. I was so impressed by @paulkrugman’s book that the next time I was in Boston visiting a BF @MIT, I emailed him to ask to meet. He was heading off on a trip himself, but we overlapped at Boston Logan, & he met me, signed my book, & talked Econ.
