Race and identity have long determined who has power and who makes decisions. But power dynamics are changing.

That’s why we’re bringing you The Recast, a new newsletter with fresh insights and voices that challenge “business as usual.”

In our first issue, we’re taking a closer look at Congress.

The 117th Congress is the most diverse ever, but there's a disconnect between the diversity among Congress members and the folks who work for them.

Staffers are tasked with drafting policies, planning legislative rollouts, monitoring staff pay rates and scheduling committee hearings.

And in Congress very few people of color can be found in their ranks.
politi.co/3pNFJOa
We also took a closer look at a recent string of violent attacks against elderly Asian Americans.

Race-based crimes against Asian Americans have been on the rise since the start of the pandemic as bigots look for a Covid scapegoat. politi.co/3pNFJOa
Some AAPI politicians like @RepJudyChu are pushing for the reintroduction of the No Hate Act, which sets up a framework for collecting hate crime data and grants for state-run hate crime hotlines.

It passed in the House last May but died in the Senate.

There are many more stories to tell about how race and identity intersect with power and politics.

Join us in exploring them all in The Recast, every Tuesday and Friday:

P.S. We want to hear from you, too.

How do race and identity shape your life? What do you think of the country’s ever-changing political scene? Who are the up-and-coming leaders molding politics and power? Tell us in the replies or email therecast@politico.com and let us know.

HHS Secretary-designate Xavier Becerra appears to be on a smooth path to Senate confirmation. But two 2 days of generally collegial hearings in Senate panels exposed fault lines that could shape Biden's post-pandemic agenda. Our takeaways 👇 politi.co/3r0CGUk
1. The fight is shifting from who gets covered to the cost

Senators from both sides grilled Becerra on how the Biden administration will work to bring down the cost of insurance coverage, prescription drugs, and medical tests and procedures politi.co/3r0CGUk
2. ‘Medicare for All’ has replaced Obamacare as the GOP’s boogeyman

Finance ranking member Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) even demanded Becerra promise not to pursue a “federal takeover of health care.”

There will be five special House elections in the early months of Joe Biden’s presidency. Here’s what we know about them so far — and what we could learn from them as they develop 👇 politi.co/3buV00Z
LA-02: This New Orleans-based district is open after Cedric Richmond vacated his seat to become a W.H. senior adviser.

It is a deep blue district where Democrats are expected to maintain control on March 20, but the question is who will emerge. politi.co/3buV00Z
LA-05: This district, which stretches along much of the state’s eastern border, is a heavily Republican district that will likely stay that way.

It is open because Republican Luke Letlow died of Covid-19 complications after winning the 2020 election. politi.co/3buV00Z
