At the NEC Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic working group on ‘BAME’ structures, the #GV5 pushed for our Black & Asian Minority Ethnic Labour members to have the final say
Members need to feel included & represented, we’ll update on progress of this point ASAP
1/8
We requested parity on voting places for CLPs & TUs members to the National Black, Asian Minority Ethnic committee.
We pushed for regular equality data capture, to increase the visibility & self organisation of our Black, Asian Minority Ethnic members.
2/8
The plan is to have the inaugural Black, Asian Minority Ethnic conference this year & then every year in or around spring/summer
The Black, Asian Minority Ethnic conference WILL be able to suggest rule changes to the National Conference ✊🏽(similar to the Women’s Conference)
3/8
We’ve finally agreed to ditch the acronym ‘BAME’ & the full title will be used within the new structure.
The #GV5 wanted OMOV (One Member One Vote) for all votes within the new structure, we were unable to reach consensus on this, so we’ll keep you posted on the outcome.
4/8
We raised concerns about ‘BAME Labour’ due to lack of transparency, effectiveness & accountability, which has resulted in a lack of engagement & trust - much more scrutiny is needed.
5/8
We pushed for Black, Asian Minority Ethnic members to be able to vote for the committee members & chair outside of conference - We’ll let you know how this pans out too.
Regional groups are key to building representation & a mapping excercise has been done to help this.
6/8
We pushed for changes to representation of Black, Asian Minority Ethnic members within local government elections following the democracy review & conference agreement.
We received assurances there will be a review after May this year & plan in place in readiness for 2022
7/8
This is just a snapshot
The current NEC Black, Asian Minority Ethnic Rep will update more fully.
