At @SecureDemocracy we've traditionally framed malign influence as a soft power capabilities separate from hard power.

But, China's malign influence often crosses over into gray zone conflict and/or deterrence.

China has weaponized information manipulation to erode the confidence of Taiwanese military personnel and civil society through disinfo claims.

For example, this happened late last year...

But China also did the same thing several years ago:

In addition to the countless Chinese sorties into Taiwan's airspace, which aim to probe defense capabilities as well as confidence in government:

These are just a few of the numerous ways China has used hard and soft power to play off each other for the purpose of malignantly influencing a democracy.

And any strategy to combat China's malign Influence must include gray zone escalation/deterrence scenarios.
