House NOW debating HR 1, the Democrats' top legislative priority for 117th Congress to reform election, voting rights and ethics laws.
HR 1, "For The People's Act," 1st passed House in 2019 on 234-193 party line vote, but was never considered by GOP-led Senate & opposed by President Trump. Republicans call the bill "For The Politicians Act" and GOP leadership is whipping against it, urging its members to vote No.
Hoyer in House HR 1 debate: "Last year, we lost an extraordinary giant in our country. His name was John Lewis,an accolade of Martin Luther King Jr's and a servant for the people. This is a very, very important bill. One could say that everything else we do depends on this bill."
Pelosi in House HR1 debate: "I do believe that one of the most undemocratic acts of the Supreme Court of the United States in its history was the so-called Citizens United decision. How could the Justices of the Supreme Court ever have, made such a decision?"
Pelosi on Justices:"I don't know if they examined their conscience in light of what's happened since then w/big dark $ weighing in..It would take Constitutional amdt to overturn Citizens United & I think we should strive for that. In the meantime,it would take an act of Congress"
Greene (R-GA) in House debate opposing HR 1: "There's real voter suppression that happens right here in Congress. Many members of Congress have to stand in long lines to enter the chamber going through metal detectors, emptying our pockets and being treated very disrespectfully."
Lofgren (D-CA) responds:"I was really stunned to hear a comparison between mbrs of Congress going thru metal detectors because some mbrs have been in violation of rules carrying weapons onto House flr w/voters having to wait 8 hrs to get to polling booth which actually happened."
