Seresto, one of the most popular flea and tick collars in the U.S., has been linked to hundreds of pet deaths, tens of thousands of injured animals and hundreds of harmed humans, EPA records show. usatoday.com/story/news/inv…
The Environmental Protection Agency is in charge of regulating products that contain pesticides.
Seresto has been on the market since 2012 and the EPA has received reports of at least 1,698 related pet deaths.
The Environmental Protection Agency hasn't told the public of the risks.
Between 2013 and 2018, 907 incidents were reported with humans, according to a September 2019 EPA assessment of human health risk. Incidents included:
A 12-year-old boy who started having seizures and vomiting after sleeping in a bed with a dog wearing a collar.
A 67-year-old woman who reported having heart arrhythmia and fatigue after sleeping in a bed with a dog wearing a collar.
A 43-year-old man put collars on eight dogs and slept in the same bed as four of them. A week later, he had ear drainage and nasal and throat irritation. A doctor said he had a hole in his ear drum.
"It's really not just happening to animals. It's happening to people who pet them as well," said Nathan Donley, a senior scientist at the Center for Biological Diversity and an expert on U.S. pesticide regulation.
