New: I took a closer look at how a sitting US congressman, @RepGosar, gave a keynote speech at a white nationalist “groyper” conference one week ago, & has since faced little repercussions for doing so.

Is he going get away with this?
huffpost.com/entry/paul-gos…
“Great meeting today with Congressman Gosar,” tweeted Nick Fuentes, a 22-year-old Holocaust denier who once compared Jews killed in Nazi gas chambers to cookies baking in an oven. “America is truly uncancelled.” huffpost.com/entry/paul-gos…
It's hard to overstate how extreme & loathsome Fuentes and his Groyper Army truly are, and why it's an emergency that a US congressman would give them his blessing
I asked 7 prominent GOP politicians if they denounced Gosar. None took the opportunity. huffpost.com/entry/paul-gos…
Gosar could find a cautionary tale in one of his fellow speakers at the white nationalist conference: Steve King.

huffpost.com/entry/paul-gos…
The most concerning part is that @RepGosar appearing at the conference is a major boost for the white nationalist groypers. It's all part of their stragegy of "entryism." huffpost.com/entry/paul-gos…
“The groypers are determined to move their brand of explicit white nationalism deeper into the conservative mainstream,” @BenLorber8 told me. “Securing Gosar’s public support is a disturbing step in that direction..." huffpost.com/entry/paul-gos…
The 7 GOP pols I asked to denounce Gosar — none of whom took the opportunity — all denounced Steve King in 2019.

"Why are Republicans accused of racism?” was the headline of a Tim Scott op-ed at the time. “Because we’re silent on things like this.” huffpost.com/entry/paul-gos…
At any rate, please read the story. I'm essentially making an argument that this should be... a bigger story. huffpost.com/entry/paul-gos…

New from @marinafang & me: There was a 150% increase in anti-Asian hate crimes in major US cities last year, according to a new @proflevin analysis huffpost.com/entry/anti-asi…
.@proflevin told HuffPost he predicts the national FBI data for 2020, once it’s released this fall, will show a “century-high” number of hate crimes targeting Asian Americans. huffpost.com/entry/anti-asi…
.@RepGraceMeng blamed racist rhetoric from public officials: "Although Trump is no longer in office, his past anti-Asian rhetoric and use of terms like ‘Chinese virus’ and ‘Kung-flu’ continues to threaten the safety of the Asian American community." huffpost.com/entry/anti-asi…

New: updated @HuffPost tally finds 57 state & local GOP officials at Jan. 6 rally that turned into the insurrection, most of whom are now resisting calls to resign.

- only 2 have resigned
- 4 were arrested
- 20 falsely blamed “antifa” for violence m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_60…
These GOP officials included an extremist sheriff who discussed harming members of Congress, a town council member who is closely affiliated with the neo-fascist Proud Boys, and a county commissioner from Florida who once discussed beheading liberals. m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_60…
There were at least:

- 16 GOP members of state houses or assemblies
- 4 state senators
- 1 state AG
- 6 county commissioners
- 7 city council members
- 2 mayors
- 3 school board members
- 2 state GOP chairs
- 2 prosecutors

& more at the rally m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_60…

Damn there's a lot of amazing @HuffPost reporting this week.

Like this @JessReports piece on the children of QAnon believers. huffpost.com/entry/children…
And this piece from @AlannaVagianos about all the insurrectionists with a history of violence against women huffpost.com/entry/nine-far…
And this @mtredden / @EmilyRPeck piece on the debate over who "deserves" a stimulus check huffpost.com/entry/stimulus…

In 2019 I wrote a series of stories exposing a dozen US servicemen as members of the white nationalist group Identity Evropa

Among them were 2 National Guardsmen....both of whom, after being exposed as fascists, were allowed to stay in the National Guard huffpost.com/entry/white-na…
This was the first story huffpost.com/entry/white-na…

New: My look at why police didn't see MAGA insurrectionists as a threat ahead of the siege on the capitol.

Institutionally, American police have seen pro-Trump extremists as allies, especially during 2020's historic anti-racist uprisings. huffpost.com/entry/cops-mag…
It's imperative to remember the scale of state violence visited upon Black Lives Matter protesters in 2020.

And all the stories, so many stories, of cops choosing to ally themselves with white fascists showing up to confront & attack BLM protesters. huffpost.com/entry/cops-mag… Image
American police's institutional MAGA-ness also likely made them blind to the reality that the president's followers posed a threat to police themselves. huffpost.com/entry/cops-mag… Image

New: One of the men arrested in a militia plot to kidnap the Michigan governor appeared on stage earlier this year with Sheriff Dar Leaf.

Leaf is part of the far-right "constitutional sheriff" movement, which works with & seeks to legitimize militias. huffpost.com/entry/michigan…
.@FOX17 first reported that William Nulls appeared alongside Sheriff Leaf at the anti-lockdown rally in May.

Interviewed last night, Leaf appeared to defend the militiaman, who he says he knows, and then argued it'd be legal to arrest Gov. Whitmer.
What Leaf didn't acknowledge in that interview is that he attended the 2019 conference of the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, which is closely tied to this country's anti-government patriot movement, which includes militias. huffpost.com/entry/michigan…
