On Thursday an event took place defending @BristolUni Prof David Miller. Arguments were made that there is a principle of academic freedom involved. Speakers agreed that the Jewish students may have been right to be upset but that Miller shouldn't face censure for his comments.
Perhaps the most striking depiction of the trap set for Jewish students is laid out by Tom Mills.
Jewish students can speak out...but if media and politicians take an interest that's something else entirely...he's concerned about "conservative political interests"
The renowned scholar @TariqModood of @BristolUni defended Miller's scholarship while being gently critical of his use of language.
Modood is responding to a claim no one made. The claim is that it's now rather hard for Jewish students to attend Miller's classes.
Modood is the only speaker to push back against the idea that "this is all part of the IHRA campaign".
To defend Miller is necessarily to buy into the idea that this is a campaign directed from above rather than a straightforward wave of revulsion against Miller's comments.
Modood outlines the issues well but when he says "I think the students have taken what David said wrongly, he wasn't attacking them, he wasn't smearing them." he's contradicting Miller himself.
One of the speakers was former @UKLabour councillor and career academic Harriet Bradley whose contribution to the meeting was effectively annulled by her assertion that she knows nothing about the details of the students or the case.
It should be noted that @jrschlosberg displayed sensitivity & nuance in dealing with Miller's comments in his talk. It is to his credit that he has done so.
There is no defence to be mounted of Miller for anyone who has read his full comments, he is clear and unambiguous.
The other day Hastings and Rye Palestine Solidarity Campaign hosted Asa Winstanley and Jonathan Cooke to discuss "Propaganda, Censorship and the Israel lobby"
Find out about Israel's "troll army" and why @DavidHirsh is "poisonous"
Cooke is helpful in that he defines just who he thinks the Israel lobby actually are. Hint it's a bunch of Jewish charities mainly
And by the way "we talk a lot about Vladimir Putin and troll armies well Israel..."
Can anyone resist a meeting with the strap line: "What's happening with the purge in the @ukLabour Party? David Miller is just the last [sic]victim. Come along to discuss what to do to oppose the witchhunt" (the image below is a real slide from the event)
We couldn't miss it
In fact the meeting was a full briefing as to how the witch hunt against Labour party members was carried out below is an edited video of a lecture on how it all happened:
One shouldn't get confused, the diagram on show is NOT conspiratorial, it is a scientific breakdown of how the witch hunt was carried out.
Yesterday at an event attended by 350 people including former @UKLabour MP @DerbyChrisW, @BristolUni Prof David Miller, @STWuk Steering committee & occasional @guardian commenter Sami Ramadani spoke about Jews as a global Zionist conspiracy.
Prof David Miller of @BristolUni lashes out against @UJS_PRES and Bristol Jewish Society, points out @UJS_UK & JSOC are "formally members of the Zionist movement..."
"Its fundamental to Zionism to encourage islamophobia and anti Arab racism too."
We pointed out other comments he made during his 10 minute rant yesterday
READ these quotes from an interview in Electronic Intifada given by @SOAS prof Gilbert Achcar and ask yourself why there is no Jewish Society there:
1. "It is obvious that the Israeli state and Israeli politicians make cynical use of the Holocaust to justify their stances."
2. "the Zionist movement has little legitimacy to speak for the victims of the Holocaust, as the historical record shows that it failed to prioritize the rescue of the Jews during the Holocaust and focused instead on its goal of a Jewish state."
3. "These lessons teach us that we need to counter the Zionist state and what it is doing to the Palestinians. In fact, as victims of national quasi-racial oppression, the Palestinians are much more entitled than the Zionists to invoke the lessons of the Holocaust."
Editor of @JewishChron@stephenpollard has written an excellent article about antisemitism on campus, the article uses data from a recent @CST_UK report.
Ray Bush is Professor of African Studies and Development Politics @UniversityLeeds you can see his profile at Leeds and also an insightful comment that the "Zionist entity shapes US mideast policy" essl.leeds.ac.uk/politics/staff…
Raymondo is confused about what a Nazi is. He keeps thinking Jews are the Nazis.
No Raymondo Jews are the ones who were slaughtered by the Nazis and fighting the Nazis
