A thread about basketball (not really), the best studio show in sports, and two unexpectedly heartfelt stories that have stuck with me over the years that I think a number of you might enjoy. Oh, and there’s also a fun documentary rec to celebrate it all at the end. 1/x
Inside the NBA on TNT (@NBAonTNT) is celebrating 30 yrs (Covid yrs, really 31). I was a fan of the show long before I joined the TNT / @WarnerMedia team. Camaraderie, joy and fun permeates from hosts @TurnerSportsEJ, @TheJetOnTNT, Charles Barkley and @SHAQ. It’s infectious. 2/x
The first of the two stories that has stuck with me for years centers on Charles Barkley. In my opinion, the story (next tweet) is a wonderful lesson about the amazing things that can happen in life when we don’t place labels (subconsciously or consciously) on people. 3/x
The below is best in audio 14mins. Log line: After Charles Barkley’s mother passed away, a cat litter scientist from Iowa showed up at the funeral. “Everybody’s, like, ‘Who’s the Asian dude over there?’” Barkley recalls. “I said, ‘That’s my boy, Lin.’" 4/x wbur.org/onlyagame/2018…
The 2nd story that has stuck is about Ernie Johnson. For decades as a viewer, I never imagined that Ernie’s personal life could be more remarkable than his professional life of entertaining millions and sitting alongside Hall of Famers. I was wrong. 5/x facebook.com/NBAONTNT/video…
Inside the NBA is a special show by any measure. 30+ yrs with moments of joy, great chemistry, laughs, heart...and basketball too. What a gift that this show exists. And now there is a 4 part documentary series called The Inside Story that celebrates it all. 6/x
Catch the premiere of the 4th (final) ep on Sun after the NBA All-Star Game on TNT. The entire docu series will live on HBO Max starting next month. Major props + thx to Tim Kiely (producer, Yinzer) and the entire team at TNT and Turner Sports. The best studio show in sports. 7/x
P.S. 16 minute powerful profile on Ernie Johnson’s personal life courtesy of ESPN. Remarkable. 8/8
Hollywood history time. What you’re looking at isn’t just a soundstage on the @WarnerBros lot in CA. It is, in my opinion, a ridiculous story that would never happen today. This Gandalf of a soundstage (going from Grey to White) is my favorite soundstage in all of Hollywood. 1/x
Soundstage 16 used to be like the others. While it had a bigger footprint than many soundstages pre-1935, its height was unremarkable, it was largely unassuming and didn’t appear to be all that powerful. It was just Soundstage 7 then. I think of it as Gandalf the Grey era. 2/x
In 1935, @WarnerBros was prepping a big musical to be shot on Soundstage 7. The kind referred to back then as the BIGGEST and WITH A WORLD’S CHAMPIONSHIP CAST. Massive rush of chorus girls to the lot kind of deal. (Hollywood has never been known for its subtlety) 3/x
