Usually I don't interact with trolls and I let slide a lot of things on twitter because policing is not something I like to do (nor I believe it's the proper action). But when your opinion is full of hate, racism, and prejudice against the south of Italy, then I've a problem.
and that's because it's a prejudice which was driven since the "unity" of Italy. And now it's somehow normalised to chant "Vesuvio, wash them with fire" during a football match
Before the unity of italy, we were (very) rich, had the first railway, second naval force for commerce in Europe, first military academy, and so on and so on. After the unity we suddenly become lazy, dirty, unwilling to work and so on....
The unity of italy also is the spark that created the mafia and the organised crime. That's because from one day to another we were left without government, and the police force left there were for oppression and not support of the locals (carabinieri).
how can you trust a government born not from unity but oppression?
Same story for what they are called nowadays "Brigante" which is a dispregiative terms for "partisan". Few people who fought the oppression after the unity. The history is written by the winner...
so those partisan have been written down in history as "brigand" and not "partisan".
plenty of traditional songs from the period incite the revolution against the oppression: antiwarsongs.org/confronta.php?…
so now, we were left without money (they moved the cash and gold to the north), without industries (moved to the north), without government, and with military oppression (mass shooting).
and this is when the mafia (or any organised crime) start. For defending its own population, as a resistance power (see for example how and when mafia started in USA). If there is no supportive government, you need someone to support the local population.
for the Italian I can suggest to read this book.
Which Is litterally how the Savoia organised concentration camps for the southerners:
for the English speaking people (maybe even @ChemistryKit
) this book maybe a good start
"Terroni: All That Has Been Done to Ensure that the Italians of the South Became Southerners"
and this is why I get extremely triggered when I see racial slur against the south of Italy.... that's because I know the history of the place, and how we got there.
