Open letter to the headmaster of Chew Valley Secondary School and the Lighthouse Schools Partnership.
The government guidance on face coverings in secondary schools now recommends the wearing of these coverings in classrooms.
Not only have the government stopped short of mandating face coverings in classrooms but the new guidance was promptly followed up by a very clear statement that the guidance itself is voluntary. The updated guidance did not create any new legal obligations.
Public Health England recommend that children of secondary school age wear face coverings where a distance from others of 1m cannot be maintained and “there is widespread transmission in the area”.
The government guidance on face coverings clearly states that “carrying an exemption card or badge is a personal choice and is not by law”.
The government have been very careful to ensure that any legal obligation for school policy which may be in
contradiction to laws which exist to protect individual rights falls firmly with the schools themselves.
Despite very low transmission rates in the area of Chew Valley School you have chosen to implement policy in excess of government guidance.
Not only insisting on mandatory wearing of face coverings in classrooms but including that children with exemptions are required to wear identification to that effect and with the threat of segregation if they fail to comply.
This is against our
equality laws as well as being an act of degradation and humiliation of a person. Forcing persons to bear witness to the degradation and humiliation of others is an act of torture.
I am shocked and saddened at your sudden turn to this outrageous
approach after having been impressed with the school’s work prior to this point. You previously had a good balance of ensuring safety whilst being mindful and respectful of the children as individuals.
Other schools in the area have not taken
such a hard line and I would ask that you review the policy on face coverings in Wells Cathedral School. I would ask that you are mindful that in your area cases of the virus are incredibly low so as to be almost negligible
and there have been zero deaths in the last 7 days. I would ask you to consider the children’s mental health a priority. This policy cannot be about satisfying adults who should know better.
I implore you to revisit and revise your policy on face coverings at Chew Valley School and within the wider schools partnership. Should you choose not to address the issues I have raised I will instruct my solicitor to write a letter of intent.
