Objectively hilarious that the people who normally tell us about the genius of the founders are now jumping in to protect the UK Royal family
Hot take: to keep this Republic, America needs more immigrants from former colonies to push back against the growing monarchist sympathies among native borns.
Congrats to the UK Royal Family on winning the coveted Santa Monica white nationalist endorsement. Wonder what he means when he praises them for "preserving the traditions and heritage of the UK"? nbcnews.com/news/latino/af…

Sometimes the best way to understand a system is through someone's personal account of how it worked for them. This from @realLandsEnd is going to help you understand administrative burdens in SSDI better than any aggregate statistics.
One incredibly thoughtful part of this piece is the degree to which the construction of the individual in the eyes of the US state - and the burdens imposed upon them - are based on connections to work (we are seeing this play out now with the debate over a children's allowance). Image
The state imposes the greatest burdens upon those who are experiencing conditions - such as scarcity or ill health - that makes it harder for them to deal with such burdens at a time when they most need help: a human capital Catch 22. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11… Image

I remember as a kid being shocked looking at depictions of the Irish as ape-like in 19th century British political cartoons. Presumably people would not tolerate this today. Which makes me puzzled about why so many are unwilling to allow some forms of representation to disappear.
The simian-like portrayal of the Irish followed them across the Atlantic as they fled a famine, used by a nativist press to portray them as sub-human, untrustworthy, and a threat to the political order.
In some cases, it was hard to distinguish between portrayals of the Irish and Blacks. And in some cases the connection between the two was made explicit (see the cover from Harpers Weekly on the left)

Under its current leadership, GA has become the state with the longest wait lines in the country esp in urban areas. In 2020, black voters still turned out, so now GA Republicans will make it harder to vote, incl making it illegal to provide water to those spending hours in line.
Vote-by-mail helped in 2020 disrupted Brint Kemp’s effort to increase the costs of voting for Black voters. It gave equal access to the polls. Which is why Georgia Republicans are now seeking to eliminate it
GA GOP added voter ID that affected Black voters but championed absentee voting when whites used it. Now they are limiting mail voting and requiring voter ID now that Blacks have embraced those tools. nytimes.com/2021/03/06/us/…

So yesterday, I became a character on red rose twitter.
What was that like? At the risk of drawing another pile on where I am told I am an awful human being and a neoliberal shill of Big Biden, some thoughts.
My original post below, which was definitely sarcastic. It was in response to a fairly specific claim by David Sirota – that Manchin could be compelled to support a $15 min wage if progressive members of Congress threatened to not to support the COVID bill
This claim seemed unrealistic to me, and as I explained in a thread, if it were so obvious a “professional politican” – that is someone whose full time job is to achieve their policy goals - would have applied it. This include Sirota’s former boss, whom he called out in his piece

The best way to understand America today is to study the post-Reconstruction era.
States passing bills to limit the vote. Congress trying to ensure equal access to the ballot, opposed by those who say its federal overreach. It has all happened before
nytimes.com/2021/03/05/opi…
New in APSR: incredible historical study demonstrating how administrative burdens systematically reduced Black access to the ballot. cambridge.org/core/journals/…
Just an extraordinary data viz from one of the authors. Blacks had equivalent political participation as whites in the 1870s & 1880s. Jim Crow meant it would be over 100 years before they would reach equivalent levels of participation.

The weird thing here is that both Gray and Sirota have worked in politics, for a guy who is now one of the most powerful politicians in the Senate. If they have a workable plan to achieve his goals, they should let him know!
Not sure I am going to be able to recover from this. Absolutely brutal owns.
