I work diligently day in and day out to reduce the incidence of pediatric firearm injuries through research, education, clinical intervention and advocacy. 2/
I do this for one simple but striking reason. What many of you may not realize is that gun violence is the LEADING cause of death for youth in the state of SC and in the country.
As a pediatrician who has dedicated my life to keeping children safe and healthy, 3/
I refuse to sit idly by as long as this fact remains true.
The bill you are considering will not only not protect our children but is actually a threat to public safety.
This bill would dismantle SC’s current system of permitting and responsible gun ownership. 4/
This bill would allow for teenagers to carry.
This bill, as written, would allow 18 and 19 year olds to openly carry firearms without a permit. 5/
You aren’t here for a lesson in neurodevelopment, but I believe it is relevant to point out that the development of the prefrontal cortex, responsible for executive functions is not complete until age 25.
Allowing teenagers to carry guns is a bad idea. 6/
Gun violence is a public health crisis and this bill is a threat to our public safety.
I implore you, do not pass this dangerous bill. Rather, let’s work together to implement evidence-based solutions that would protect the health and safety of all South Carolinians.
