This morning @meparecetenaz spoke in support of @ShutDownBerks with @MakeTheRoadPA, @CASAforall & @SunriseBerks to tell the Berks County to #CutTheContract with ICE and to end the incarceration of immigrants in out community. She then uplifted the story of one detained child. 1/3
This child was detained in the Berks Family Prison for more than a year & a half enduring trauma for seeking safety. When we returned to the office, we learned his green card was delivered in today's mail. He no longer lives in fear and hopes for a life of safety & service. 2/3
The detention of this child was unnecessary & unlawful. It served no purpose but suffering. Our community rejects the further imprisonment of immigrants in our backyard. We are confident the people of Berks will not stand for the detention of a single person more & will be heard.

1/🚨BREAKING: @RAICESTEXAS, @Rapid_Defense and @aldea_pjc just filed lawsuit, O.M.G. v. Wolf, against DHS & DOJ demanding the immediate release of all families being held in family detention centers due to COVID-19 eminent risk.
This includes Karnes, Berks and Dilley Babyjail.
2/These organizations represent immigrant families who have sought protection from persecution and torture and who are detained civilly at these jails. The FRCs are the only immigration family detention centers in the United States.
3/Each of the FRCs has failed to take adequate measures to protect these families from COVID-19. Continued detention cannot be justified as it not only risks the families’ health but also the local healthcare system and community should a family contract COVID-19 while detained.

When @DHSMcAleenan tries to sell an Immigration Babyjail as a “Gold Standard” think about what that means? It means indefinitely jailing children, for profit. It means traumatizing kids who are already traumatized. It means kids do not have freedom to play, to think, or to grow.
We watched today as the Secretary described the detention of children as being “campus-like.” Its not. Its prison-like. You are not free to leave. You have no privacy. The purpose of detaining kids is to isolate them from people who love them and the people who can help them.
In babyjail, your jailers are the parents, parents are the babysitters. Parents do not decide when or what kids eat. Your parents can not help you when you are sick or make any parental decisions. Kids become defiant, angry, depressed, helpless. Kids play, when guards let them.
