I'm pretty emotional about the end of my 3rd yr placement 😭🥳 It has been an absolute joy. #MyStudentSLTday#Slt2b
Here are some of the reasons why. 1) A future-proof mix of one day of telehealth + one day on the wards.
2) two encouraging Practice Educators who helped me own my strengths, supported me to push myself + gave useful feedback / areas to focus on. 3) PEs + other members of dept were always looking for opportunities for my learning, eg Let's get you in to a VF clinic for a morning.
4) Peer-support. I was on placement with another student -it was so valuable to have space + time to chat + debrief + ask each other questions + cheerlead, especially since class has been online all year.
My PE also organised 2 remote sessions with another student to discuss management of a client + come up with a plan. And to share tips on how to lead an initial voice session. Sometimes it's easier to discuss more openly and creatively with other students.
5) Never feeling like a spare part or an after thought - tiny things like talking through the plan for the week/day ahead (even if it's loose. We are anxious students!), always having a chair or a room, shown where resources are + given explicit encouragement to rummage
6) A welcoming + lovely department. They opened up + got to know me (I know, this is a hard one to expect! But it's so lovely to talk about non-uni or SLT things sometimes + be treated as a *person* as well as a student) It allowed me to relax + therefore have more confidence.
7) A fresh new band 5 joining at the same time was an added bonus. Chatting to her about NQP feelings + her journey + seeing her work really helped make the transition from student > therapist seem less daunting.
