can’t believe this is happening: crass, insensitive, disproportionate, outrageous
Sadiq Khan has issued statement:

“The scenes from the vigil at Clapham Common tonight are unacceptable.

“The police have a responsibility to enforce Covid laws but from the images I have seen it is clear the response was at times neither appropriate nor proportionate.”
Ed Davey, leader of the Lib Dems, has called for Cressida Dick’s resignation
and Home Secretary @pritipatel has called the scenes “upsetting”

Sunak is asked by @GeorgeWParker

- why 40 out of 45 towns receiving £1bn through new "town deals" happen to have Conservative MPs

- why affluent Richmondshire (his seat) is designated as "priority 1" in the separate Levelling-up Fund while places like Barnsley are priority 2
the chancellor said something about how it was all fair and there was some kind of "index of economic need" or whatevs
here’s the question and answer on whether Sunak is indulging in pork barrel politics

I know everyone is distracted by the USA but Rishi Sunak extending the entire 80% furlough to the spring is a huge U-turn - even by the standards of this, the *government of the U-turns* - and a reminder of the grim winter prognosis
here’s the @ft story - it’s hard to think of an economic statement that has been as comprehensively ripped to shreds as Sunak’s September “winter economy plan”

ft.com/content/8f9371…
- first (September announcement) it was 22% state support for furloughed jobs
- then they added 67% for furloughed staff in Tier 3
- then (late October) overall scheme became 62% of hours not worked
- then it was 80% for 1-month November lockdown
- now it’s 80% for six months
