1. Civil rights groups are pressuring corporations to oppose the Georgia legislature's voter suppression bills.

The 6 companies they are targeting are being cagey about their positions.

So I contacted each of them again.

Follow along if interested.

2. The Georgia Chamber said yesterday that it was opposed to provisions in the bills "that restrict or diminish voter access"

@HomeDepot, @CocaCola, @Delta, @UPS, @Aflac, @SouthernCompany are members of the Georgia Chamber

But do they agree?

popular.info/p/update-georg…
@HomeDepot @CocaCola @Delta @UPS @aflac @SouthernCompany 3. @HomeDepot said it was "aligned with the Chamber." That confirms it is opposed to provisions that restrict voting.

This is the strongest statement a major corporation has taken against the bill

(Although it stops short of actually opposing the bills)

popular.info/p/update-georg…
@HomeDepot @CocaCola @Delta @UPS @aflac @SouthernCompany 4. @Delta resent a statement which gives a nod to voting rights but is silent on the bills themselves.

Delta promotes itself as a champion of voting rights & racial equality

But won't oppose bills described as "a redux of Jim Crow"

@HomeDepot @CocaCola @Delta @UPS @aflac @SouthernCompany 5. @CocaCola said it's "position has not changed" and resent a statement that nods at voting rights but is silent on the bills.

Prior to the 2020 election, Coke promoted itself as a champion of voting rights.

popular.info/p/update-georg…
6. @Aflac, @UPS, and @SouthernCompany did not respond to comment.

It illustrates how groups like the Georgia Chamber are used that purport to represent corporations

When asked to confirm a statement reflects their views, the corporations are quiet

popular.info/p/update-georg…
7. The civil rights coalition - including @Georgia_NAACP, @NewGAProject and @BlackVotersMtr - believes that the Georgia Chamber's statement doesn't go nearly far enough because it fails to oppose the bill and suggests the 2020 election was not "secure"

popular.info/p/update-georg…
8. The coalition held two protests over the weekend has more actions planned for this week, including a "die-in" at @CocaCola's headquarters.

UPDATE: @HomeDepot is trying its best to HAVE IT BOTH WAYS on Georgia's voter suppression bills.

The Georgia Chamber said it was "in opposition" to voting restrictions and @HomeDepot told the WashPost (and me) it was "aligned" w/that

So far so good.
@HomeDepot But now @HomeDepot has contacted the Washington Post and said even though they oppose voting restrictions in Georgia THAT DOESN'T MEAN THEY OPPOSE GEORGIA'S VOTER SUPPRESSION BILLS

Huh?
@HomeDepot .@CocaCola, after telling me its position on the bills hadn't changed, told the WashPost that it was also "aligned" with the Chamber.

I'm guessing Coke would also claim that that this does not mean that they are opposed to the bills, but it's hard to say

UPDATE: @CocaCola says they now OPPOSE the voter suppression bills in the Georgia legislature.

This is a big change from 24 hours ago, which is the last time I heard from them

washingtonpost.com/business/2021/…
@CocaCola 2. @HomeDepot told me yesterday that they are "aligned" with the Georgia Chamber, which issued a statement expressing “concern and opposition” to the voter suppression bills.

Now @CocaCola has joined them.

I explain the dynamic here:

3. To be clear, the civil rights groups that have been pressuring the corporations do not believe this is enough. They think the Georgia Chamber statement is weak and the companies should issue their own statements definitely rejecting the bills

1. Just want to state for the record that there are plenty of women and men on Substack who are not harassing other journalists or engaged in navel gazing discussions about "cancel culture."

We are trying to produce meaningful independent journalism and writing.
2. There are a handful of people trying to define the platform in their own image, but it doesn't belong to them.

When you allow them to represent everyone on Substack, you are playing their game.

I'm going to recommend a few folks on Substack that I admire.

BREAKING

The voter suppression bills in the Georgia legislature appear to be hitting some roadblocks.

Republicans have abandoned their plan to end no excuse absentee voting.

Now, a key House committee hearing on what's left of the proposal has been abruptly canceled.
2. In related news, the pressure on Georgia-based corporations to speak out against these bills continues to increase.

A new digital campaign by the @SEIU and @progress4_ga slams @CocaCola, @ups, @aflac, @HomeDepot, @southerncompany, and @Delta for supporting vote suppressors
3. The next two weeks will determine what happens with these bills and the future of democracy in Georgia.

BREAKING

New statement from the Georgia Chamber of Commerce says it opposes "provisions found in both HB 531 and SB 241 that restrict or diminish voter access"

@CocaCola, @Delta, @UPS, @HomeDepot, @aflac, @SouthernCompany are all members

cnbc.com/2021/03/14/geo…
@CocaCola @Delta @UPS @HomeDepot @aflac @SouthernCompany 2. Practically every provision in HB 531 and SB 241 restricts voter access. So if you oppose those provisions, there is not much left of either bill.

This isn't the same as the companies themselves speaking out, but it's a big step.

popular.info/p/georgia
@CocaCola @Delta @UPS @HomeDepot @aflac @SouthernCompany 3. A coalition of civil rights groups began pressuring the Georgia Chamber and these six companies after an investigation by popular.info revealed the business community had backed the sponsors of voter suppression legislation w/millions

1. Here's Arizona Rep. @johnkavanagh_az, who is pushing voter suppression laws through the state legislature:

"Republicans are more concerned about fraud, so we don't mind putting security measures in that won't let everybody vote -- but everybody shouldn't be voting"
@JohnKavanagh_AZ 2. More @JohnKavanagh_AZ:

"Not everybody wants to vote, and if somebody is uninterested in voting, that probably means that they're totally uninformed on the issues. Quantity is important, but we have to look at the quality of votes, as well."

cnn.com/2021/03/11/pol…
@JohnKavanagh_AZ 3. Kavanaugh, who apparently believes its his job to ensure that "uninformed" people do not vote is supported by major corporations.

His donors include:

@ATT
@Allstate
@BCBSAssociation
@CoxComm
@WeAreFarmers
@pfizer
@UnitedHealthGrp
@USAA
