NEW: The Evangelical Alliance, representing 3,500 churches in the UK, has urged the PM not to ban conversion therapy in all forms.

"It is essential that those who experience same sex attraction are free to pursue & receive support to help live in accordance with their beliefs."
The letter says a ban "would place ministry leaders at risk of arrest for encouraging young people to maintain chastity until marriage".

And "criminalise a member of a church who prays with another member when they ask for prayer to resist temptation".

Some MPs share this view.
The Evangelical Alliance has long supported conversion therapy - a declaration on its website states so. The Alliance has declined our requests for interview in the past, but has decided to go public as debate intensifies over what form a 'ban' on conversion therapy should take.
Responding, @JayneOzanne says:

"Here is clear proof that there are those who wish to continue the conversion therapy with impunity, deaf to the cries of the multitude of people they've harmed. The govt has a clear choice - to side with perpetrators or protect vulnerable victims"
Winners Chapel, which we investigated in 2018, is a member of the Evangelical Alliance. A pastor there told our undercover reporter than he was "under the control of Satan" and God could "fix" his sexuality.

(Winners wasn't an EA member at the time.)

LATEST: Evangelical Alliance member @SteveChalke condemns their letter.

"Oppressive practices are most dangerous when they are dressed up as ‘pastoral support’...based on the misguided and damaging belief that the sexual or gender orientation of LGBT+ people is an ‘illness’."
WATCH: “Would you condemn an exorcism?”

Evangelical Alliance say it’s up to the government to define conversion therapy, as I try to ask them where they draw the line between prayer and abuse.

🚨BREAKING: Major breakthrough for campaigners as Equalities Minister promises to “ban” conversion therapy.

Following resignation of 3 equalities advisors, Liz Truss has said, “we will shortly be bringing forward plans to ban conversion therapy, which is an abhorrent practice.”
It follows this explosive resignation on Wednesday by @JayneOzanne, one of the country’s most respected Christian and LGBT+ campaigners, who accused the Govt of creating a “hostile environment”. Two other advisors followed shortly afterwards.
Huge delight among campaigners that word “ban” has finally been reinstated into government language. But they hold their breath for the detail of the ban, which campaigners say must cover religious settings if it is to have any meaningful effect.

🚨EXCLUSIVE: The government is creating a "hostile environment" for LGBT+ people, according to its own equalities advisor.

Resigning in protest, @JayneOzanne accuses some of becoming "Ministers for Inequality", particularly over conversion therapy.

itv.com/news/2021-03-1…
Jayne Ozanne has also resigned from the Conservative Party, telling me she fears it is "going back to the days of Thatcher".

She appeals directly to Boris Johnson, accusing his government of "ignorance" and telling him LGBT+ people are "scared" by the direction he is taking.
Govt response:

"The govt is committed to building a country in which everyone, no matter their sexuality, race or religion, is free to live their lives as they choose.

"We have repeatedly made clear that we will take action to end conversion therapy".

..."end", not "ban".

NEW: Testing centres are reporting that the system for recording student Covid tests has gone down.

“Web system has completely crashed”.

Thousands of students are being tested this week ahead of their return. If they can’t get their results swiftly it’ll cause chaos next week.
The issue is apparently with students / parents being able to register for testing. Staff are still able to process tests and do their side of things, but the student won’t be able to get the result without registering.
The problems have been going on for two hours now.

BREAKING: Care home residents will be allowed one regular indoor visitor from 8th March in England, including holding hands. Testing required before entry, PPE worn throughout.

Visiting essentially back to December situation, but up to individual homes whether they allow it.
Tonight @age_uk welcomes the fact visitors will be allowed back in.

“We know that some older people have stopped eating and drinking, despite the best efforts of staff to take their place. Sometimes, only the person you love most in the world will do.”
But one residents group @rightsforresid2 tells me tonight that they are “devastated” visits will still be down to discretion of homes.

Some have gone above and beyond to allow face to face visits, many have installed pods etc, but some are too afraid to allow visits at all.
