Ok, transportation nerds. Let’s geek out and talk about data for a bit.
You can’t fix what you don’t know and that means tracking, measuring, and collecting information about all things traffic. Unfortunately, data (as with other things in traffic safety) can be lacking or have huge gaps in what we gather or ask.
What are some of your fav data sources to help make the case for #ZeroTrafficDeaths? We’ll go first- recently inspired (to do more) and dismayed (that we haven't seen progress) by the findings in the new edition of @SmartGrowthUSA Dangerous by Design. smartgrowthamerica.org/dangerous-by-d…
And our friends at @IIHS_autosafety regular do the hard work for us by digging into important topics and pulling out trends, lessons, and ways to move forward, safely.
Maybe our favorite data points? They come from the Road to Zero strategy doc and elsewhere to show how we could cut traffic fatalities by the thousands with countermeasures and technology we have right now as pointed out by @schmangee in @planetizenplanetizen.com/features/11260…
But we know we need more/better data! Data about mode shift, data about racial and gender disparities, data that can inform our work to create safer streets. Who has interesting work going on that we should lift up and share out? What's a question you wish we would see answered?
Let’s not overlook other forms of "data". Great reporting like @propublica Walking While Black can shed a light on some of the inequities in our transportation system. propublica.org/series/walking…
And lived experience is important in capturing not only the stories but also to plan for future. We need to find ways of capturing and sharing this in a way that is sincere and compensates communities for their time and knowledge (hint: join us tomorrow nsc-org.zoom.us/webinar/regist…)
We want to know- what's your Wednesday wisdom around data to help us get to #ZeroTrafficDeaths
