“What shocked me at the time was the number of my own colleagues that had never heard the remarks. And I played it for them," Steve Womack said of Mo Brooks’ remarks at Jan. 6 rally as they weighed kicking him off committees. "There were jaws dropping." cnn.com/2021/03/19/pol…
In a recent interview, Brooks offered no regrets for his January 6 remarks.
"I did my duty for my country," Brooks then pointed to his full remarks, asking: "Did you see this sentence right before? You guys have done a great disservice to our country by distorting the truth."
Yet in the sentence before, he said: "Regardless of today's outcome, the 2022 and 2024 elections are right around the corner, and America does not need and cannot stand, cannot tolerate any more weakling, cowering, wimpy Republican congressman and senators who covet the power..
...and prestige the swamp has to offer while groveling at the feet and the knees of the special interest masters,” he said on Jan. 6

New: Dems defend review of IA race with certified GOP winner, with Lofgren saying she wants it done soon and Ds rejecting comparisons to Trump. “We can't be concerned about optics," per Butterfield. Ernst tells us it puts lone D in delegation “in jeopardy” cnn.com/2021/03/18/pol…
Grassley: “They were complaining because Republicans wouldn't tell people that Biden won the election on November 4, the day after the election, and now they're playing this game.”

Ernst: “Where is Cindy Axne saying, 'This is an outrage and the Iowa voters have spoken?' "
Some Dem uneasiness in the ranks. "I want to see what compelling reasons there are for the feds to get involved in this," Lou Correa said. "I think these are issues that right now are probably best left at the state level."

Just asked Senate Judiciary Chairman Dick Durbin about passing in this Congress a pathway to citizenship for the 11 undocumented immigrants, and he said: “I don't see a means for reaching that. I want it. I think we are much more likely to deal with discreet elements."
They’d need 60 votes for such a plan, which they don’t have. Durbin pointed to the decision by Pelosi to move this week on two specific pieces — for dreamers and farm workers - as a clear indication of where this Congress is headed. He thinks it’d be easier to move pieces.

Marsha Blackburn whacks DOJ nominee Vanita Gupta after pressing her on whether Gov. Cuomo's accusers should be believed. Gupta says they should be heard and investigated. Blackburn chides her response.

Here's how Blackburn answered questions about allegations against Roy Moore:
Q: But may I ask, do you find the allegations against him credible?

BLACKBURN: "What I find with the allegations is that there again this is going to be something that the people of Alabama need to decide."

npr.org/2017/12/08/569…
Blackburn: "Whenever I hear of allegations, it is something that causes me concern that there would have been that type of activity or the accusation of that activity."

Sen. Tom Carper is the lead sponsor of amendment to extend jobless benefits that Democratic leaders are furiously trying to get Sen. Joe Manchin to support. And Carper just had a conversation with John Cornyn about where things stand. Per Cornyn, Carper told him: "We're stuck."
Cornyn added: "It sounds like a box canyon. I don't know why you put a bill on the floor and have a vote on something and you didn't know how the vote is going to turn out. That's kind of like whipping 101."
Cornyn added that he's heard separately that Manchin may vote for the GOP alternative, which has been offered by Sen. Rob Portman, in addition to the Carper amendment. That means both would likely be adopted. It's unclear though which proposal would take precedence.
