A little story about @GayleKing: Gayle and I have sadly never met in person (thanks COVID!). But a few years ago, my first week ever sitting behind an anchor desk, I got an email from Gayle. I thought it was a prank because there was no way that she would be emailing ME. 1/
Mind you, I was anchoring at 4 and 5am in the morning during the holidays so I was even more shocked. But it was @GayleKing. And she wanted to tell me that I was doing a good job. And that she had been meaning to message me after the incident with a certain former president 2/
@GayleKing has sent me similar messages of support several times over the years. We had never actually met. Sometimes people ask me how you can be a good mentor. I don’t know if that’s what she intended but THAT is how you do it. Just hearing from her was a huge boost to me 3/
At a time when I felt like I didn’t really know what I was doing. @GayleKing is an incredible journalist who I’ve looked up to for years. But she took the time to lift me up. And I’ll be forever grateful for that. (And I’m glad we FINALLY met (virtually) a few weeks ago 🤗)
