There will very likely be performative outrage and a full-blown disinformation campaign around this. It will emerge from the bowels of white supremacist fever swamps, get laundered by local far right radio hack Carl DeMaio on the air and Facebook groups off the air, and then...
...members of the ReOpen San Diego and Defend East County groups will get their usual crews together to astroturf anti-migrant "demonstrations" that will then by covered by clueless local press as though they are genuine, authentic, and simply "concerned citizens."
It won't just be DeMaio, but he's definitely the one laundering the most noxious content as fodder for his terrible radio show right now.
It will then be debated to death and terrible people with white supremacist links will be futher normalized and given a veneer of respectability in panels or "debates." It will end up terrorizing vulnerable kids and empowering racists.

It'd be cool to be wrong but the reason I'm
comfortable making such a prediction is because I've seen this exact stupid pattern play out over and over and over and over again, with the same people (and whoever they can rope in or swindle with their laundered bullshit) doing the same things. Only the topics change.
That's how bad people have done this shit using my industry, and gotten away with it, all along.
Yup. Just as I predicted. The useful idiot/desperate grifter brigade has lurched into full swing. And of course they're looping schools into it -- they're the same people laundering the "ReOpen" shit, not to mention "Recall Newsom."
This was a few days ago. Friday maybe? I held on to it to see how long it would take to get astroturfed back into the mainstream. This is Justin Haskins of Defend East County, that QAnon-loving wannabe militia group in their sEcReT fAcEboOk gRoUp Image
This group, this guy. And suddenly he develops an interest in immigration all on his own? This guy? Yeah, right.

So that’s how these disinformation campaigns work. A few scripted phone calls, posts, and “spontaneous” rallies followed by interviews with useful idiots. Easiest thing in the world — if you’re not concerned about telling the truth or helping people.
By the way, this is the model for everything going on across the United States. Look to your local dipshit gadflies and Bircher shit-mouths. It’s being coordinated through them.
Oh yeah, and that outrage always gets a little help from bullshit sites and juiced up algorithms. And friends, fighting this stupid bullshit for all these years is why all your friendly neighborhood debunkers are so tired and cranky today calmatters.org/politics/2021/…
The march of the useful idiots continues with one of our local far-right whackadoodle stations (we have more than one lol)
Guess who is also based in San Diego? Why, that would be disinformation specialists OANN
So now this bullshit grift has the illusion of national consensus to bring in the marks, you see how it works?
And the bullshit circuit is complete and now they are running an emotionally charged narrative through it. And that is exactly how the disinfo sausage is made.

foxnews.com/politics/black…
See how it works? See how these people push their trash from the white supremacist fringes into the mainstream?
And that's why I'm still fighting. They're trying to distract us all from their massive failures and the preventable suffering and death that took place on their watch, and they're lying about the world's most vulnerable people in order to try to pull it off.
Keep watching for this cycle, and soon you'll see it popping up everywhere. Bad people are using the border as a Trojan horse for white supremacist ideology and astroturfing hateful lies about asylum seekers and refugees into the mainstream for personal profit and political gain
Unfortunately many of those bad people have a lot of influence and money and power. They're the #TantonNetwork.

motherjones.com/politics/2021/…
See how these tweets I'm quoting are all being sent within the same timeframe? That's because this is coordinated messaging. That's also why I'm quoting instead of screengrabbing them.
This is how the #TantonNetwork's disinfo campaigns have worked in the past. They just moved some of the operations online - and into the Trump administration. You're watching the exact same shit play out now, again and again, only online as well as off nytimes.com/2011/04/17/us/… ImageImage

Hey speaking of networks, this is the guy whose radio show Stephen Miller used to call into all the time when he was a teenager growing up in Los Angeles. Elder eventually invited Miller on in person and introduced him to David Horowitz, and that started his whole hateful career

See? They all got the same memo with the same talking points circulated to them to make it look like they're all coming to the same conclusion independently of one another.

I've been thinking about doing this thread for a couple of days. This is mostly for myself so I can go back to it, I don't really expect anybody in this dying hellscape to see it, but I wanted to lay it out here for my own sake. Here's my last few years in news stories:
Here's me, just so incredibly naive in late 2016, saying that "fake news" wasn't the problem so much as lack of journalism. For the record, I still stand by this, but at the time I had no idea how much social media was in on the disinfo attacks:

wired.com/2016/11/accord…
After a terrible series of events and realizations, I came forward anonymously: theguardian.com/technology/201…

Hi everybody! A lot of you have been asking me what you can get me for my birthday, which is this weekend. Just kidding, literally no one asked me that but just in case you were considering getting me something please donate here instead entertainmentcommunity.org
Alternately, please consider joining a #WritersGuildofAmerica picket line and support the absolute shit out of this strike
I haven't really articulated this much but: Disinformation depends on altering our stories, true ones and fictional ones, to affect how we see ourselves and each other and make the world seem much more negative. There is a lot of power in culture, so of course jackholes want it

"The majority of the 1,000-plus book challenges analyzed by The Post were filed by just 11 people.
Each of these people brought 10 or more challenges against books in their school district; one man filed 92 challenges."

See? SEE? What did I tell you? It's always the same people for a reason!!
Anyway I hope WaPo's op-ed department remembers this the next time they decide to have some noxious bothesideser let rip

I meant it when I said climate warlords.
"As the planet warms, more calamities will strike the U.S. and, if the recent past is any indication, create new opportunities for militias and other extremist groups to mobilize and recruit...." Four-panel meme that says: ...
That's why all the insane border hardening and eugenics shit is happening now too. Borders are there to consolidate resources. Well, we're the resources they're trying to consolidate.
